My brother-in-law is currently in the military and said he can get the military tickets for my family (four of us) at his base. I thought military personnel had to show id when entering the parks to get the discount? Can he get tickets for our family and we can use them or is this something we shouldn't do? I don't want to be dishonest! Thanks for any help!!

He can buy tix at the base for himself and you too but either him or your sister needs to activate them at the park with id.
I assume she has a military id as his wife.
Once activated you can come and go without them.
The tix are four days with hopper, water, or both fwiw

The military member or spouse with an military id needs to be present to activate them.

Do you know if activated, do they have to be used within a certain time frame?

Yes - he can purchase for you, BUT he would have ot be going to activate them at one of the ticket windows.

They will take his fingerprint and they will be attached to all the tickets to show that yes, a valid military ID was shown at activation (your fingerprint still works when goign through the gate)

It HAS to be the service member activating them, OR you sister has to show that he is deployed and show orders for her to activate them.

yes by 10/3/15

Not true based on my ten or so times doing it.
They simply asked for a military id and activated them no question of who is or isn't actually in the military or if that person was there or not, deployed, whatever.
Only once did they even ask to see the people as a whole and that one time they did make us sign them in front of the cm.

Side note he/she can buy 6 tix
1 of which must be used by him/her so five tops can be given to family and friends

This is what we were told by WDW both at the ticket center and when we purchased tickets on base becuase I questioned this. I had considered going while the DH was gone to a school for a few weeks, and they told me that Disney wouldn't activate them. I called Disney and they said that was correct.

Times, they are changing due to people wanting to take advantage of discounts they are not entitled to. (this is what I was told was the reason for this)

In no way an di implying that the OP is tryign to take advantage of the system!!

People on base and CM can and will give wrong information. In fact just today I went on base to purchase tickets and I know we only have 2 salute tickets left for this year, yet the person on base try to convince me I can buy and activate more than six (not for immediate family). I've been given wrong information about military tickets by CM at least 3 times in the last year. You do not have to show deployment/orders to be able to activate the spouse is able to activate them without an issue. Though OP however if the tickets are activated months in advance they can ask for an ID while using them the first time.

However if they are not going with you they can buy regular Disney tickets on base for a little discount you can still save around $22+ dollar per ticket depending on the amount of days. Those don't need activation.

I agree that this is incorrect. Any family member with a valid military ID can activate the tickets. No orders needed and the SM does not have to be deployed.

You certainly encountered an inordinate number of uninformed people. Family members with military ids have always been able to buy and activate these tickets.

I have purchased the military AFS 4-day tickets by myself, and I was the spouse of a military member (now widow). Either the soldier or spouse can purchase these 4-day tickets. There is no requirement to show deployment orders if the spouse alone (with military ID) purchases the tickets. The tickets are good to use through Oct 3, 2015. The spouse can also book the military resort discount at Disney resorts (with military ID) without the soldier being present for the resort stay. I learned this the hard $$ way, after the first time I tried to book and was told I couldn't because I was the spouse traveling without the military member. I joined the DisBoards after that time and learned from DisBoard folks that the Disney CM I talked to had it all wrong.

OP, you BIL or his spouse has to physically show up at WDW to activate the 4-day AFS tickets. After the activation process, the parties using the tickets can come and go on their own. The Military also has discounted MYW (regular Disney) tickets. The discount is essentially the lack of sales tax charged. These tickets don't have to be activated, and they expire 14 days after first use.

Just the spouse can activate the AFS tickets in addition to the military member. No other family members are allowed to activate these tickets.

I agree that this is incorrect. Any family member with a valid military ID can activate the tickets. No orders needed and the SM does not have to be deployed.

Not "any family member" --it has to be the service member or spouse of the service member to activate tickets. Children of service members--minors or over 18 cannot activate tickets.

One more clarification.

There are two different types of "military" tickets.

The Salute tickets are the best value. These are the tickets that either the service member or spouse MUST be present to activate. They are only good for four days and cannot have days added to them.

There are also discounted tickets available at the base. As others have said, the discount is basically the lack of sales tax. These can be for any amount of days you need. Your BIL could buy these tickets for you and he does not have to be with you to use them.
