Military Discount

Do you have any information about Shades of Green resort? Is it nice? Is it worthwhile?

I'm retired Army and have stayed at Shades of Green a number of times. Unless you're going during peak season, or are not active/retired military, there are only two benefits (in my opinion) to staying at Shades of Green. The reason is that active/retired military currently receive an 30/35/40% discount to value/mod/deluxe Disney resorts.

The two benefits I definitely do see are 1) The size of the room for the price (bigger than most deluxe resort rooms) and 2) the location of the room for the price (easy walking distance to the Poly).

The down side is their transportation is sorely lacking (a huge deal if you fly in), you have to pay for Park parking (if you drive and want to drive yourself to the park for the convenience) and you are not eligible for the Disney Dining Plan.

The reason that SoG is such a value during peak season, is that the rates there are the same year round. Allears has a great photo gallery as well as review about SoG in their Accommodations section.

Don't take that the wrong way, it's a great hotel at a great location for a great price. Personally I prefer to be in a Disney Resort if possible, but would not hesitate to stay at SoG.

I absolutely think SOG is worthwhile! As you can see in my signature, we've stayed there twice already, with a third trip scheduled there in October.

The rooms are quite large for the price/night. The grounds are beautiful. They have two pools (one a "quiet" pool, the other is Mickey shaped and not quiet!) - the quiet pool is under renovation right now to become a zero-entry pool (handicapped accessible), but they are hoping it will be open by September. They've recently renovated the gift store and AAFES store on site as well.

WRT transportation, the trip in March is the first time we've used SOG transportation, and we didn't have any problems with it. It's a bit more restrictive (buses leave at scheduled times, usually once/hour), but once on the bus we thought it was generally a shorter trip than it would be had we taken Disney transport. The only exceptions being going to MK and Epcot, as it's faster to walk to the Poly or TTC and grab the monorail. They have a "shady shuttle" golf cart that will take you to the front of the property which makes the time shorter as well.

On our first trip to SOG we rented a car and paid the $5/day, and that was worth it to us as well. Yes, it sucks that it's not free - and it sucked that we didn't get free parking at the parks - but we only drove to AK and DHS, and we usually do those in one day (1/2 at each), so only paying Disney parking once.

Not having ME makes a difference, but Shades does have a deal worked out with one of the car services that seems pretty OK. We are thinking we'll be using that in October as opposed to renting a car.

Some of the information on the allears site is out of date. For example, the allears page still lists that the internet is $6.95/day - it is now free. They also list a crib rental as $5/day, and that was also free during our stay in March. The pictures also haven't been updated in quite some time. Given that, I really suggest checking out the photo galleries and information on Shades of Green's own website and calling them for questions - or ask on their FB page

We have stayed there four times so I know the place pretty well. All in all I agree with Japatzke. If you can swing it, stay in an actual Disney resort.

This is excellent news because my trip is in the beginning of October so I've been holding off on buying tickets.

Awesome-ness !!! Being in the Military and being a DVC owner, beautiful friendship !!! Knew they would renew it with all their "Disney hiring military members" commercials on ESPN !!!
