military discount

Hi all,
I remember there being a military discount offered earlier this year (or was it late last year? ) and didn't really pay a lot of attention cuz I'm not in the military, nor is DBF. NOW come to found out, his parents would like to join us for vacation this year and possibly pay for part of our vacation (otherwise we can't save up enough) if we can find a good deal for September. His dad is retired military, so this seems like something I should look into.

Does anyone remember if you had to book by a certain date to recive the military discount, or if it was for certain resorts only?

The cliff notes are that your DBF's father can get a free 5 day MYWPH WP & More ticket (if he meets all of the eligibility requirements for the tickets) and he could purchase up to 5 "Companion" tickets for $99/ea. The Companion ticket will be a 5 day MYW ticket and PHing can be added for $25 extra/ea. ticket and WP & More can be added for $25 extra/ea. ticket. The tickets expire and are no longer good at WDW after 12/23/09.

I'm not 100% on the resort rates for military. But your DBF's father can get resort rooms at SOG for him, his wife and should be able to sponsor a room for you and your DBF. I believe he could sponsor up to three rooms and you can check the SOG Website to find that out. Your DBF's father would be able to book at least one WDW resort room at 40% off and possibly more than one using the current WDW military discount, that is something I'm really not sure about. Just like the AP & FL discounted rooms there are only a certain amount of rooms at each resort tier for those military discounted rate rooms. Any military MWR office should have more info.

Oh, well thank you very much! I am really hoping that this will make it much easier for us to afford to go. I will definitely have fun (who wouldn't at WDW, right?!) and do a pre/trip report on it!!!!

I have a related question. I am headed to Disney 4/17 with my family (DH, DS, parents, 2 sis and 1 sis fiance) along with my aunt, uncle, and their 2 grandchildren. We just found out last week that my cousin (uncle to 2 grandchildren) is waiting to hear if his leave has been approved. He is an active Corporal in the Army and has received quotes for Shades of Green. Does Disney provide a discount on other WDW rooms? We are staying at POR and if he could get a discounted rate there (even if it is a little more that SOG) he may want to do that to be closer to us and participate in the dining plan like the rest of us. Can he do this? He already knows about the free ticket which he and his fiance (also in the Army) will take advantage of. The only question is can he get a military discount at POR on room/dining plan?

This is for the room - the tickets you already know about and would get at the gate. If you go to Shades to get the vouchers, you won't pay tax on them. You don't have to stay at Shades to buy tickets there but you do have to have a valid military ID for someone in the party. Then you take your vouchers to a maingate will-call window at one of the parks and they will exchange them for the 5 day tickets. I was reading the info on the $99 tickets and at the end, it says you must have been active between 1/1/2008 and 12/23/2009.

I don't know if any retired military would qualify????

Yes, retired military can purchase the companion tickets but they must be with the companions the first time the tickets are activated/used. Thanks LilGMom for helping me! I missed what the pp was looking for there. You are absolutely correct and that was one thing we learned that hurt us later -- my father-in-law got his free ticket and one companion ticket not realizing he couldn't get any more companion tickets later. I went to Disney with a friend who has a husband in Iraq now and she had to decide if she and her husband would be back to Disney before the promo was over - if she took advantage of the companion ticket during our trip for her ticket and mine, her husband would not get his free ticket because we were using his ID to get our tickets and you can only activate on the ID once. She decided they would not come back so we both bought our tickets at the $99 rate but the lady at Shades made sure she understood her husband could not get his free ticket since we were using his ID.
