I know I am far from the only military person (retired Army) who is a Disney freak. How many of us are there?

Did you know that you can sign up to help take down the flag at Magic Kingdom? And you will get a photo, a special certificate and a pin that only "veteran of the day" gets. It's pretty cool!

Also, don't miss out on Shades of Green! What a fantastic military benefit!

84 days to Disney!

We are!!! DH and I are both Vetrans-although not retired!!! We stayed at the SOG and it was a Blast!!! And DS is joining the Navy this May so taking the flag down would be exciting for all of us!!!

I'll have to look into that-do you sign up at guest services???

DH and I are both vets, DH is still active army and DS is also active army. We all just love Disney.
Thanks to all service members for your service to our country!!!!!!!!

All you need to do is stop by guest services or give them a call at city hall. They'll set you up. Just be prepared to be the center of attention for a lot of people as they stop to watch the ceremony! ; o ) It is pretty cool though. They take the flag down, fold it and then hand it off to you. Then the whole group marches off to the cast member exit over by the hat store. Then they give you your items. It was actually pretty moving to honor our flag at the most American of places.

My husband was the "veteran for a day" a couple of years ago. I puffed up with pride watching him rehearse with the security men a few minutes prior to his "showtime". A crowd of CM's and regular folks like me gathered, the music played, they saluted, and the flag began to descend. Very moving--until the flag stuck. There we all are, staring up at the flag with the National Anthem playing in the background, and it's going nowhere. Finally, the crowd starts to dissipate, but my hubby and the security guys are trying to yank/pull/cut it down. They eventually decide to let a cherry picker take care of it after the park closes. Several CM's come up to shake his hand and say how sorry they were. Everyone was EXTREMELY nice and said "this has never happened before"--he still got his pin and certificate and photo, too. (I had been snapping away at the entire thing, so I have a ton of photos as well...some my husband would rather forget! I think he's to the point of laughing about it now, but back then, it wasn't so funny for him.)

SOG is our resort of choice, even though we're AP holders and could take advantage of other discounts. You just can't beat the price, the location, and the HUGE size of the rooms!

I can understand how it was not funny at the time, but it is funny now. But, the incident made the event even more memorable, I bet. You'll just have to try again the next time you are there! Tell him this ol' sarge said "Hoo-ah!"
