No pumpkins yet so far this year. Marie will pick up a few small/medium size ones at the grocery store, for decoration and for the animals that hang around the area who like to eat them. When the kids were young, we used to go to some of the local farms that specialize in Fall/Halloween.

A side note, Illinois is the country's biggest producer of pumpkins by far.

I think I read a few years back that the majority of pumpkins grown for canned pumpkin puree comes from Indiana. Maybe Indy grows pumpkins “unsuitable” for decor.

I bought two plain orange pumpkins, a few tiny white and orange ones, plus several medium sized “weird” pumpkins: striped, beige, dark green, etc.
Plus a few weird gourds.

But I do NOT like those pumpkins covered with pimples or scabs.

lol my husband hates those as well. It’s funny because I think my neighbor across the street loves them..I noticed one this AM on her front step…and I know she will get more!! Muahhhh

With fall in full swing, pumpkin sales are up. But in Illinois, the production of pumpkin products is a year-round effort.

Illinois is the nation’s largest pumpkin-producing state, and produces nearly all the nation’s canned pumpkins.

Mohammed Babadoost, a plant pathology professor at the College of Aces, said the significance of pumpkins in Illinois is measurable.

“We grow almost all, at least 90% of canned pumpkins, meaning that if Illinois fails in pumpkin production there would be no pumpkin pie,” Babadoost said.

Other states, such as Indiana, Ohio, New York and California, produce seasonal pumpkins for decoration, but not for processing, he said.
