Does anyone get migranes when they are pregnant? and if you do what are your symptoms and how do you deal with them?

I had 2 when I was expecting ds....the first one I just suffered with it, the squeezing of my head felt like it was going to pop off it was so painful, but I did not want to take anything that would hurt the baby.
the second one I called my OBGYN she called in a prescription for fioricet(SP?) told me to take one with 2 Advil it saved me.princess:

I got migraines before, during and after pregnancy. Mine are always behind one eye (usually my right) and when they get really bad, I'd get the dry heaves. Most times I feel like my eye is going to pulsate right out of my head (and I must admit, the pain is so bad, that there are moments I wish it would if it meant the pain would go away).

The most my doctor would allow me to take was Excedrin when I was pregnant. So even if I got a headache and I didn't think it was a migraine right away, I took the Excedrin anyway because it usually would help curtail it. If I didn't catch it, then I was just stuck and had to wait it out. At that point, put me in a dark room, throw a pillow over my head and leave me alone! LOL! It's no fun. A migraine is definitely different from a regular headache and you will most assuredly know the difference the moment you experience one-there will be no question that its a migraine. Like PP, you can get non-narcotic medications. I had tried Fioricet amongst other things and they never helped me at all. The only thing that does help me is a shot of Demerol and Vistiral, but you can't have that when your pregnant. Some docs prescribe Imitrex, but I'm not sure if that is one you can take while pregnant. It seems to help a lot of people, but I had no luck with it. It stinks though when you have to find out by trial and error and your in pain. Good luck and I hope that you have NO migraines at all-some people have a wonderful absence of them during pregnancy even though they would normally get them all the time. ;)

Make sure your doctor knows about your migraines. They might be a sign of something else. Not to scare you, but my friend had a brain tumor that developed during her pregnancy.
I developed seizures and had to be hospitalized during my pregnancy.
Also headaches are a sign of preeclampsia, so make sure your doc knows what's going on. Sadly, there isn't too much you can take for relief.

I tended to have only a few migraine's when I was pg. I use WellPatch's Migraine Cooling Headache Pads (they used to be called Migraine Ice). Sometimes they make a huge difference even without meds and sometime they just dull the pain a little. They are drug-free so you can use them when you're pg. I get mine from drugstore.com because they don't sell them around here.

Try ground ginger. Dissolve 1/3 teaspoon in some hot water with some honey. I know it sounds crazy, but it really did help mine. It doesn't taste very good, but I would force it down then wrap my head with an ice pack and compression wrap and go to bed. The combo. of the ginger, dark, and cold always worked.

Good luck! AND CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! :goodvibes

I have never had then except when I am pregnant. I am currently coming off a 2 day migraine bender. My head was in such pain that I could not even lift it off the pillow. I felt like my eye was swollen shut and I wanted to vomit continually. The only thing the doctor will let me take is tylenol. My head still hurts but it is at least bearable after over 2 days. The first time this happened I was pregant with my DD. I had them for almost 3 months straight. It was awful. Never had them with my sons. I am now pregnant with a girl and I have them again. I guess the female hormones do me in.:cutie: Try to rest in a quiet and dark room with an ice pack on your head. Good luck!princess:

I am currently pregnant, and in my first trimester I swear I got a migraine almost everyday! It happened when I was pregnant with my son too. My Ob prescribed me Firocet. That stuff worked for me like a miracle!! I do still get them occasionaly, but right now Reg Tylenol is seeming to help. Good Luck!!

Mine do me in for two days too. I have only really had them when I was preg and for the first couple months after I give birth. I believe mine are triggered by hormone shifts. Well I have had one or two around my period but nothing like I get when I am prego. Brain tumor thats awful wow I hope I don't have any of that going on. When I get mine it starts with pins and needles that starts in my hand goes up my arm and runs down my face that will cycle through twice then I get all that vision stuff and I feel really spacey. After that is done my head hurts and I feel retarded.

Speaking of migraines while pregnant... I'm getting one!!! UGH!!!

I was blessed with mostly migraine free pregnancies previously... guess I'm not so lucky this time.

I had migraines with both of my pregnancies. I totally feel for you. I went 6 mo. and then my OB prescribed fiorcet. It worked and I only used it when I was really desperate. My son is 5 and my daughter is 2 and no problems:cheer2: Hopefully you can find something to work for you. Best of luck and congratulations.:grouphug:

I had wierd migraines when pregnant...they were called retinal migraines. I saw stars but felt no pain.

I get migraines a few times a year. I had one when I was pregnant w/ my youngest and I thought I was dying. I have been told (not by my doctor, but it worked) to drink coffee. Something about the caffeine. I have also taken OTC migrain medicine (maybe Excedrin brand?) and it helped to a degree.

I got them before I was pregnant and a couple while pregnant, but none since (yeah!). When I was pregnant, the doctor told me to use caffeine, tylenol, and sleep. If that didn't kill it (if I catch on soon enough, that almost always works for me), to call her and they could call in a higher Tylenol medicine (Tylenol 3 or whatever they call it). Almost always, I can get a double shot espresso drink and then sleep it off and I'm fine a few hours later when I wake up.

At my doctor's recommendation, the minute I felt one coming on I took two Tylenol and drank a Coke. A real Coke, not diet or caffeine free, a real one. Worked like a charm. I was worried about the caffeine, but my OBGYN assured me this was okay.

Good luck!

I remember my 2nd trimester was the trimester of the headache. I had one almost constantly. I don't know if you would call it a migraine or not, but it jst lasted for days typically. I do remember it going away to a degree in 3rd trimester. I think OB said I could take Tylenol and I did a few times. I tried to stay away from it too much though.

I can only say I can sympathize!

I remember doing that too! It worked great. :goodvibes
