I was 35 when I did it and I think I had more fun than my kids 11 (thought is was fun) and 8 (had no interest). My mother also had fun with it. She kept trying to tell me who the culprit was not realizing that we had different clues.

Niece 16 started with DS7. DS lost interest and she insisted on finishing it and took DH with her!

DH and I tried it and we had kids instructing us of what to do, LOL! It's really fun for all ages! Of course I can see some teenagers maybe thinking it's childish, but I'm sure they think that about a lot of things.

How do you begin the game? Is there a certain place you go to start?

go to the mid ship detective desk and get a card an map. the card is what you use to play with.

deck 2 outside enchanted gardens or mid ship on deck 5 (might be on 4)

after you "register" your card, they tell you where to go next.

I think teens might enjoy the Muppets mission more than the other two. It actually involves some level of critical thought to eliminate suspects, and like all things Muppets, there is subtle sophisticated humor that I think teens would appreciate.

But even with just 3 concepts, there are multiple variations. I played all three numerous times 2 years ago and I don't remember getting the exact same result any of the times I did it.

Do you get to pick which mission you want to do?

Yes, you can freely pick from Paintings/Puppies/Muppets. As @Dug720 said, they mix up each mission, so your culprit, and even your potential culprits, aren't the same every time.

I do the Puppies and the Paintings missions with my 7-y.o., but if it's with my older kids, or just me by myself, it's always Muppets.

All teens are different. While some I am sure will think it is "lame", those that enjoy all things Disney, games and puzzles, etc. will love this activity. It is similar to Sorcerers at MK. Also it is fun for them to do as a group (siblings, cousins or friends from Vibe/Edge). My kids (now 16, 19, 23) have been playing since our first Dream cruise 5 years ago.

The muppets one is the longest and most difficult of the three (not that it's particularly hard but there's more suspects you have to eliminate). We played that one first. We took the afternoon off (I can't remember if it was a sea day or if it was the day at Grand Cayman as we didn't disembark for that) and played it. Stopped halfway through to sit for a while and have a drink and snack and then finished it up. You have to walk all through the ship to complete it. It's a great way to see the ship and good exercise as well as some reasonable mental exercise. The next day we did the stolen paintings. Our friends had already done the missing puppies on a previous cruise so we skipped that with the intent of maybe doing it another day but ended up playing several rounds of mini golf instead.

I saw people of all ages doing the Midship Detective on The Dream. The kids and I enjoyed it!
