I am traveling home for the first time in well... years. I have a 9 hour layover from midnight to 9 am at JFK. I am missing good American food here in the Caribbean and am looking for some pointers. I want to eat. I obviously need like an all night diner or something. I can take a cab to wherever or subway, time isn't an issue. Anyone know what I can do?

Any info on Restaurant Florent?

Wow, no NYC folk able to help me out? Should I take a cab to Manhattan or will subway be ok at that hour? How long will it take me?

Not one of the best places to be going out at that time of the evening. This is all I could find near the airport. It's about six miles away. Call them to see if they will be open at that time.

Sherwood Diner

Also, You could take the AirTrain from JFK to Jamica, NY. There should be some places open at that time. Again, not one of the best places to be at that time of the night.

Enjoy

I have to agree with previous poster. I've been to NYC a few times and really enjoy it. Honestly, I wouldn't think about venturing outside of the airport at those hours. Think your just asking for trouble. Lisa

Do Not go in to Jamaica at night. From inside the Jam. train station you can take the Long Island Railroad directly into Penn Station. There are plenty of food stations at Penn Station. Rosa's Pizzeria in Penn Station has very good pizza (it's on the L.I.R.R. level). If you're not in the mood for Pizza, there's Houlihans, Don Pepi Deli, Baskin Robins, Hot and Crusty (my personal favorite for soup and sandwich), McDonald's, Le Bon Caf, Pizza Hut/Nathans/Colombo (they are all combined into one). Some of these restaurants are on the Amtrak level and others are on the L.I.R.R. level. Here is a website that shows restaurants close by:

Good Luck and have fun.

I am not too afraid going into NYC at night, I am a fairly large young guy who has lived in Oakland and the Caribbean (two places not known for safety). If I got mugged it would suck, but so would sitting in an airport hungry for 9 hours. I think as long as I don't get pistol whipped I'd be ok. I would like to take the train to lower Manhattan, Katz Deli seems good.

Just remember at the time you are traveling, even the city that never sleeps is a little groggy and a majority of the places will be closed. Diners are your best bet as most are 24 Hour. You could go for some White Castle "Belly Bombers" as they are never closed. Just make sure that your connecting flight dosen't have to many occupied signs on it's bathrooms.

I looked up a ton of places. Katz deli and a place called florent look like good choices.

Katz's closes at 10:45P most weekdays they are only open on Friday and Saturday till 2:45A - wasnt sure what day you were flying.

Are any of these open at that time of night? Believe it or not, Grand Central Station actually closes between 2am - 6am. Who'da thunk? I always thought they were open 24 hrs. But, I guess they close so the homeless won't go in there to sleep. There is a possibility that Penn Station may close down too.

Houlihan's is closed. so are Pizza Hut/nathan's/Columbo Yogurt. And honestly, I don't think most of them are open at that time of night. Some of the places in JFK would probably start opening by 6 AM.

If you want to leave the airport, definitely take a cab, not the subway, at those hours it would run VERY infrequently. (And, Imzadi's estimation of $55 each way is correct.) So, if it is worth it to you to spend that, then I would definitely go to Cafeteria. It really is one of the top late night spots in the city and the food is great. I am personally addicted to their tomato and basil soup with grilled cheese croutons when the weather turns cold. Unfortunately, Florent closed last year.
