Put a nice bowl of soup in the microwave to heat up and five seconds in I could smell FIRE. I opened the door to find a gaping hole in the bottom of the microwave. I don't think that microwave was but 3 or 4 years old. How long should a microwave last anyway?

In any event, time to buy a new microwave I guess. So, my budget minded friends, any suggestions or recommendations for brands or styles? The dead one was a GE turntable, black and over 1000 watts I think.

Also, where's a good store to get a good value/deal too.

Thanks my budget buddies. :thumbsup2

Good place to check reviews is amazon.com. It is where I go to review most products.

I love mine, it's a sharp carousel 1100 watts. My dad bought it for me 9 yrs ago when I moved into my apartment after leaving my ex. I thought it was a gonna when my dh put chinese food in there to rewarm and didn't take the metal out, there was a fire inside, but it cleaned up well and is still going.

Not sure where in MI you are located but check out the Sears Outlet online they have a outlet store in Livonia (sorry for the misspelling).

Man I wish like HECK that mine would blow up. I continue to have the very FIRST and ONLY microwave I've ever owned...purchased (drumroll please.....) 20 years ago. No...not a typo. TWENTY YEARS!!!

The only appliance in my house that's older is my food processor. I got it at my bridal shower...24 years ago. It, too, refuses to give up.

My first reaction would to be contact GE about it. That doesn't sound normal. And if they get enough calls, it might cause a recall on that product. I have two GE microwaves, one we own and the other came with the apartment.

When we bought our NEW house, it had a NEW GE microwave in it. It blew in less than 2 minutes. I can not even tell you how bad our customer service experience was with them. We ended up with no microwave for about 6 weeks, over x-mas with family over. They ended up replacing it in the end, I really had to fight to get a new one. I will NEVER get another GE product as long as I live.

must be something in the air because my microwave sparked last week. It was a Sharp, only 2 years old and my previous one to that was only 1 year old. I asked Costco if they would give me a replacement and they said only if it was a year old. I went to Kmart and bought a Kenmore 1100 watt for $69.99, regular price $126.99. I'm hoping that paying more than $50 like my other one that it will last longer.

What model number, disneydreamersx4? I'm looking for a specific one - I think it's the 6622. Thanks!

Are you sure that microwave is still safe?

Mine is a hand-me-down from my parents, purchased by them when I was either 12 or 13. Which means it's about 24 years old. It's a Quasar Instamatic.

Costco or Best Buy is where I looked. My over the stove model died. It was about 12 years old. I hate them and want to remodel, so we got a counter top model from some friends who had an extra from their construction business. DH fixed it so I can use the light and the fan, after determining it wasn't just a fuse. Now I store my frying pans in it, but I'm thinking about stashing the good chocolate there too.

Sounds like my house. I replaced my Sharp microwave 4 years ago when I was updating my kitchen. The said microwave is now living at my Aunts. I received it as a bridal shower gift from my Bridesmaids, it will be 25 years old next year. LOL

Sorry to hear about your microwave. My MIL blew up my microwave.

My DH & I were at work and my MIL, who was visiting from out of town, went to set a timer located on the microwave but, unbeknownst to her, she actually turn the microwave on. It ran empty for several minutes before she smelled it. The glass turnstile plate cracked into several pieces. Fortunately, the rest of the microwave was fine. She called and ordered a replacement plate right away. Poor lady, she felt so bad! But all's well that ends well. At least she didn't hurt herself or burn my house down!
