Mickey's Fun Wheel and Motion Sickness

My husband is very prone to motion sickness (Forget boats, he can't even look at an ocean horizon without getting queasy.) but has no problem with heights. How would a stationary gondola be for him? I don't get motion sickness but rode this (swinging gondola) with our daughter back in 2000 and she got "go back to the room" sick.

It's hard to say but the wheel moves very slowly and then often stops between gondola's, though sometimes it will make about 1 full turn.
The horizon is still moving (up and down) so it may bother him.

Well, there ARE motion sickness bags in each of the cars. So I guess it's a real issue for some. We're fortunate not to have issues with motion sickness and were sort of surprised at how mild it seemed after reading about the "Wheel of Death" for so long.

the stationary cars should be fine, but definitely not the moving ones. Honestly the moving ones aren't as terrifying as people make them out to be - but if you have any sort of motion sickness avoid them.

Thanks, he can ride a normal Ferris wheel with no problem but not something like Tower of Terror. Did y'all know motion sickness has a huge hereditary factor? That's what our doctor told us when our daughter was looking for meds to help on a WDW trip. I never get it but she is almost as prone as her dad. Did all of the gondolas used to swing? I can't imagine opting for swinging if we had a choice.

I didn't find either kind scary, but I'm not prone to motion sickness and felt downright icky after riding in a swinging one. The stationary one wasn't any big deal, I didn't feel. Can he handle a normal ferris wheel? It's less movement than that.

I can't even watch the ride without getting sick. Seriously. THat said, my motion sickness generally is triggered by things moving by me in the opposite direction (Think moving walkways). I'm not sure being on the ride would make me sick (but I am never going on it to find out).

Makes sense that it is hereditary. My mom has horrible motion sickness also. You choose whether you want to be in the swinging or stationary line.

I can't imagine it would be a problem for him, but I'm no expert on what does and does not cause motion sickness.
Rode the swinging cars for the first time last year (daughter finally decided she wanted to do it), and was perfectly fine. On the other hand, if you want me to ride the teacups, you'd better make sure that I haven't had anything to eat in the last 12 hours.

Thanks for all of the suggestions! I think he would enjoy the views and normal Ferris wheels have never been a problem. I may just do a test run solo first.

I get motion sickness very easy, and during our last trip I took the non drowsy formula of Dramamine. It lasts for 24 hours and I managed to ride a lot of things that would otherwise make me sick.

Just thought I'd add that in case you were open to medication, or hadn't considered it.

Have him take meclizine (brand name "bonine") each morning. It works great for motion sickness and it does NOT make you drowsy/sleepy. Also get some ginger chews candy to carry with you. When he starts to feel a little quesy...chew on a ginger candy and instant relief!

When I'm in the stationary, I can SEE the moving ones. And oh gracious do they move. And keep on moving. I was getting sick just *looking* at the moving ones.

And I can cruise, I can go on ferryboats, I can go on many rides without a problem (as long as I'm properly fed and watered LOL)...but just watching the moving gondolas was making me quite ill.

I have pretty serious motion sickness (no Mad Tea Party or other spinning rides, Dumbo can be iffy, and pretty much all the roller coasters are a no-go for me) but have been fine on the non-swinging cars on Mickey's Fun Wheel. It's very much like a large ferris wheel in those cars, so if he's ridden ferris wheels before without a problem he'll be fine.

It wouldn't hurt to have something like hard candy to suck on just in case.

Oh, you mean Mickey's Wheel of Terror??? There is some interesting video of me on it in Dec....I didn't think the swinging cars would be all that bad. Wrong. It was pretty awful!! And bumbershoot is right...just being able to see the swinging cars might be enough to set your dh off.

I am a 53 year old male. I have never gotten motion sick on a Ferris wheel or roller coaster of any kind. I have gotten motion sick in the car as a child, and on a boat from time to time when out on the ocean. I cannot handle swings. I cannot handle things that go round and round (merry go rounds, spinning tea cups etc).

I rode Mickeys' wheel once on the free wheeling car. I had to ask to get off early - I was not going to make it. It was torture.
I rode Mickeys' stationary car once. It was a couple days after the bad incident on the moving car. I did not like it at all. I made it through, but it still ruined me for a couple hours. I may have had a bias against the ride before it began, but not going to try it again.

I steer clear of that ride now. This ride is not for us with motion sick tendencies.

Worst ride in the park. I love most of the other rides, I HATE this ride. My husband and kids enjoy it. I don't even like the stationary cars. There's just something about moving so slowly so high in the air. The other ride I don't like is the Silly Symphony Swings. I have ridden the Swings several times with my husband because they're his favorite, but I don't care for them because they swing out near the water. I feel like I'm going to fall into the water. I'm glad my daughter enjoys them so much, she can ride with him now.

I wouldn't risk it. It really bothered me in the stationary cars, not full blown barfing, but definitely nauseous. You don't want the next few hours of his day ruined because he doesn't feel well! I did it once and NEVER will again

I second the vote for Meclezine! I take the highest dose in the morning and I am good for the day. Before I discovered this, I couldn't handle most rides in the park. (Heck, I get nauseous just watching my daughter play Minecraft.)

Anyway, with the Meclezine I was able to ride the stationary car just fine (as far as motion sickness goes) .... The height thing is an entirely different can of worms for me. I will never ride this again.
