Looking for something to do with the kids. First visit to the world. Is the Backyard Barbeque worth it? Can you recommend something else. Short notice arriving July 30 - August 6

We attended the Backyard BBQ while there around Memorial Day. We enjoyed ourselves, and were glad we went, but will try something else next time. Here's the gist of it:

1) You are outside, under a large paviliion. They have fans, so, although its not hot, per se, its not a comfortable 78 degrees, either.

2) The fare is, uh, well, barbeque. Its very good. It includes the typical fixins', including watermelon, corn on the cob, and ice cold beer. And, its all you can eat.

3) As you can imagine, the theme is country and western. A male/female emcee duo and c/w band are the mainstays of the show.

4) The show we attended included a trick rope artist. We was pretty impressive.

5) They have a guy who teaches everyone basic line dancing technique.

6) The characters we saw were Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, and Chip and Dale. Micky, Minnie and Goofy were dressed in country outfits. They all cavort with people on the dance floor.

I say we would go somewhere else next time, just because we'd like to do something different. If you don't like country music, barbeque, or eating at shady picnics in the summer, I might reconsider.

Oops! I forgot, you asked for alternatives.

We haven't been, but its said the Hoop-de-doo Review is really good. Its more of a sit-down show, though, I think.

Chef Mickey's is a lot fun. Chef Mickey's is a restaurant in the Contemporary Resort. Food is served buffet-style. Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Max, Chip and Dale come around the tables. Donald hangs out at the entrance. If you're real lucky, like we were, you'll get a table by the windows, and you can watch the MK fireworks while you eat.

Where does this take place and do you call the regular Dining no. to make reservations?

Unfortunately, I can answer only one of your two questions. My wife made the reservations, so I'm not sure what number she called. I suspect its the same number you call to make other PS arrangements.

The Backyard Barbeque is at Fort Wilderness, between the now-closed River Country water park (was that its name?), and the dining hall, arcade, general store area. You park in the Fort Wilderness parking lot, and catch a bus to the locale.

If you go, and you have young children, get there a little early, so you can stroll through the "petting zoo" area. There's also a beach and small playground.

We go there every time we visit WDW. There is a lot of interaction with the characters. You get to dance all night with them. They do take breaks, but I think it is the best character experience and the food isn't bad at all (I am not a BBQ fan).

Thanks for replies, I'm definitely going to look to this one. Sounds right up our alley! My family will love this, we do enjoy Barbeques very much and the kids will love the characters. LOL! :teeth:

If you are not a country music fan, don't even consider the BBQ. My wife likes country music, and I thought it would be a fun surprise to schedule for the last night of a trip. Well, DW never really got into the swing of things, and the BBQ ended up being a bust.

The food was great...but as mmccoy said, don't expect anything more elaborate than ribs and corn on the cob.

Other things we didn't particularly care for:

- They either had no high chairs or few high chairs. Either way, by the time we arrived (picnic area was only half full), they were all gone.

- When you first arrive, they steer you right toward the food. You are expected to fill a plate right away. I understand the traffic flow reasons for doing this, but have you ever tried to manage a 2yo, diaper bag, and still try to fill 3 plates? Consider this fair warning to families with a lot of small children.

- They have a live band playing almost the entire time--quite loudly, I might add.

- The venue is a covered shelter, and even it September it was sweltering. All of the photos we took show our (then) 2yo son with bright red cheeks.

Don't get me wrong--it's not like we left the event really honked-off. It just isn't something that we will be doing again. We could have paid less for a nice dinner at Epcot and a showing of Illuminations, and it would have been a lot more satisfying.

Incidentally, Allears.net has many reader reviews of the BBQ, and it's amazing how people either love or hate this event. Doesn't seem to be a lot of middleground.

I have been 3 times with 4 children (babies at times) and never been rushed to eat. They let us choose a spot at a table and then go over to the food area. Just FYI

Luckily our kids are older, 4, 6, and 7 so we don't need to worry, and since we are 8 adults to 3 kids, we should be OK. I know its hard to manage with such little ones in tow, its one of the reasons this is our first WDW with the grandkids, we were waiting for all of them to be old enough to handle this kind of vacation. Thanks for the replies everyone!! :teeth:
