Mickey Mouse buys Spiderman - Disney to buy Marvel Ent.

On face, it sounds like bad news for Universal Studios..................

Yeah, thats the first thing I wondered about is how that would work, etc. Bob Iger is on CNBC right now...

Doesnt sound like it will effect the theme parks, at least in Orlando or Cali, as he said there are "agreements in place that we must honor," but he said Marvel characters may make their way into parks "around the world." One of his main points is this is a way to reach out to boys, as they have girls cornered with the princess/fairy thing....

He went on to say that there are many contracts with third parties that will remain in place, such as Spiderman and Sony, which Disney will now generate revenue from, but as those contracts expire they will re-evaluate whether to extend them or bring the characters into the Disney fold.

Too early to know anything really, but I guess it will be interesting to see how it all plays out once the merger is completed.

Translation: USF execs are invited to circle the date on which Spider-Man will close for "re-theming."

I have a feeling it will be a while before most characters could begin showing up in Disney parks. I'm sure Universal has a high degree of exclusivity for theme park experiences. Anyone know anything about USF's contracts?

Not sure where the characters would fit in he Disney parks, though. Maybe Hollywood Studios? Don't think I really want to see Wolverine in the Canada Pavilion or Spider-Man scaling Cinderella Castle.

It would make a neat idea for a 5th park, a whole Marvel theme park. The inner geek is quivering with excitement.

/i know there is the whole universal thing but IMAGINE what Disney could do.

Wolverine is a natural fit for Animal Kingdom.
Disney Studios would be another good fit.

Can't really see them fitting in at Epcot.
MK would either need a new land (or maybe Tomorrowland as that area could use something).

Marvel reminds me a little of Pixar since they have started doing their own movies in they've been trying to build good movies with Iron Man, the rebooted Hulk, and Thor not just lame comic movies like Fantastic Four. That said I'm glad Disney has $4 Billion in this down economy to spend. How about throwing some of that towards the park Iger?

This is just too weird. I can't picture Ironman sharing a float with Mickey in the next Disney parade. :scared1:

:sad1:

I agree it would be weird to see the mouse with Marvel in the same context. That is why I vote for a seperate park. And while you are at it, I want a marvel resort.

:yay:

Good point. Think about using that $4 billion on improving the parks and adding new rides instead. I think if Walt were alive today he would slap Iger for this lame move. :headache:

I think the biggest question that has to be answer revolves around the deals that are already in place with entities such as Universal Studios. For all we know, Universal Studios has rights to all characters for the next 10-20 years. In that case, to the fan of the Disney parks, we wouldn't see any changes for years.

The comic book area of Universal is themed very well. Actually, the buildings are themed well, as you truly feel like you are walking in a comic book...though I wouldn't say any of the rides aside from Spider Man (which is better than anything at Disney, in my opinion) are themed very well.

It will be interesting to see the following:
1) How long does Universal have the rights to call that part of their park "Marvel Super Hero Island"?

2) How long do they have the rights to the actual rides that are already there? I would think that this would extend beyond their contract for the name, as it is easier to rename the section of the park than it is to retheme all of the rides.

3) Does Universal's contract extend to everything that Marvel had previously made (Iron Man), or just what they had already created rides for? That is a big one for me. If the contract is limited to what is already in place, then I would assume that Disney could create a comic book themed ride as soon as possible. That would be cool.

4) If Disney decides to pursue rides/attractions, will they make them part of an existing park or create a new one. I think Marvel offers enough to support an entirely new gate, but I could see it as an addition to Hollywood Studios (more likely). As a new gate, perhaps it could be a new park dedicated to "thrill" rides, which Universal has outdone them with. As my sons are getting older, I would love to see a park filled with thrill rides.

Very interesting. I think it's a great move for Disney, and I'm really curious about how this will effect Islands of Aventure at Universal. Some of their biggest attractions are based on Marvel Characters. You can bet when their contract expires, they are in for a major overhaul.

I wouldn't call it lame, it's just a good step at divisification for the tween market. Lets see, for girls you have hannah montana, iCarly and the wizards of waverly place. For boys you have.... maybe those twins on the boat?

Heroes are far more entertaining.

Aside from a few failures like the FF and ghost rider movies, Marvel has been doing well in their productions. I hope Disney will continue that path to greatness and not just push something out toe door.

I wonder if Universal will have to pay Disney a licensing fee for the Marvel characters?

In Igers interview this morning, he specifically said Disney would begin to capture the revenue from licensing contracts in place. The example he used is the Spiderman license to Sony, but I would think the same would apply to Universal. Gotta love the idea of Disney raking it in from both ends of I-4...
