Ever since I realised that WDW was going to turn 40 in the same year I was I knew that I wanted to go out there and help them celebrate. The original plan was to go for my birthday as well but Dad and I decided we didn’t want to go twice in one year and so the June trip was changed to a Norwegian cruise instead (but that’s another PTR). The September/October trip remained though and in October of last year it was time to get the ball rolling.

Magic Kingdom opened on the 1st October 1971 and so I decided to make the trip 2 weeks, beginning on the 21st September and ending on the 5th October. I emailed DVC Member Services and got a reservation for a savannah view studio at Animal Kingdom Lodge, no problems at all. Next was flights and I managed to get flights with Virgin using Miles+Money to keep the costs down a bit. We are flying out on the 1:00 flight, which is later than we are used to, but it does mean that there will be no need to stay overnight at Gatwick, again saving a bit of money.

We normally go to WDW in April so there are a couple of things we are going to get to do for the first time this year – one of them is Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party and the other is the Food and Wine Festival. As we will be doing Food and Wine I wanted to stay near to EPCOT and so I decided on Boardwalk Villas with a Boardwalk view. DVC rules didn’t allow me to book that until 7 months before check-in date so a couple of weeks ago I phoned Member Services to check on availability for our first week. There were a few nights not available so I left it and over the following week I did some points calculations and worked out that we could just about stretch to a 1 bedroom and have enough points left for a few nights after our cruise next year. I phoned Member Services again when it got to 7 months from the start of our second week and although availability was still ‘spotty’ for a studio I was able to snag a 1 bedroom boardwalk view for the entire fortnight.

Although park hours for September are out it will be a couple of weeks before the October hours are released but even so I have sketched out a rough itinerary, which looks like this so far:

Wed 21st – Fly out, pick up our hire car and drive to the Boardwalk. Dinner will be counter service from somewhere.
Thu 22nd – Morning will be spent in Animal Kingdom (or possibly take advantage of being awake at stupid o’clock and go to EMH at Magic Kingdom). In the afternoon, as is tradition, we will go to Downtown Disney and then to Wal-Mart to stock up on goodies. Dinner will be at Sweet Tomatoes, probably the new branch at Crossroads.
Fri 23rd – Hollywood Studios in the morning and nothing planned for afternoon.
Sat 24th – Shopping day which will start, again as is tradition, by visiting the Bass Pro shop at Festival Bay mall. Another first today will be an ADR at Teppan Edo followed by my favourite of the fireworks shows, Illuminations.
Sun 25th – EPCOT in the morning then in the evening over to the Polynesian for a DIS meet.
Mon 26th – Nothing planned. Will probably end up doing mini-golf or something.
Tue 27th – Morning and evening at Magic Kingdom (with a break in the middle of the day) finishing off with MNSSHP.
Wed 28th – Fort Wilderness segway tour. We’ll go for the later tour so that we don’t need to be up early after our late night. Nothing planned for the rest of the day.
Thu 29th – Blue Springs State Park. I came across this from a post on the DIBB and think it will be a nice scenic break away from the hustle and bustle of the parks. Depending on how the weather goes we might bring this forward or push it back so we get a nice day for it.
Fri 30th – Another day with nothing planned
Sat 1st – I know it’s going to be rammed but this was only ever going to be one thing – a whole day at the Magic Kingdom and there will also be a DIS meet there (if we can find each other!)
Sun 2nd – No parks planned yet but there is a DIBB meet at the Margarita Bar in Downtown Disney.
Mon 3rd – Food and Wine Festival at EPCOT
Tue 4th – Nothing planned for the day but we will finish off at one of my favourite (and now a signature dining) restaurants – Le Cellier in EPCOT and a final viewing of Illuminations.
Wed 5th – Check-in at DTD. Find something to do for the rest of the day then head back to the airport for our 5:55 flight home.

So as I say it’s kind of a rough sketch plan at the moment – we’ll need another visit to AK and HS but I’ll put them in as and when and we’re always open to shuffling days around while we’re out there. I’ll probably put another couple of ADRs in as well – I loved Sci-Fi dine-in when we went in 2009 so I want to go there for lunch again and I might try Tony’s Town Square in Magic Kingdom as well.

So that’s it for now – next thing to wait for is our ADR date which I’ve worked out to be 25th March for the first 10 days. I’ll update as and when I’ve got the ADRs booked.

Can I just add, there's no way you look anywhere near 40! :thumbsup2

Sounds great so far David, you will love MNSSHP. :thumbsup2

See you at the Poly DIS meet. :cool1:

Great start to your trippie...see you at the dis meet on the 25th:thumbsup2

Thanks. Looking forward to the meet already. :goodvibes

Sounds like you have a great trip planned! MNSSHP is so much fun! :)

I've read a lot about MNSSHP so I'm looking forward to seeing it for myself.

Can I just add, there's no way you look anywhere near 40! :thumbsup2

Aaaww, thanks. It's wonderful what Photoshop can do.

September/October is a great time to visit.

Our first ever trip was in October and I remember it being very wet so I'm hoping the weather will be a bit kinder to us this time.

Sounds great so far David, you will love MNSSHP. :thumbsup2

See you at the Poly DIS meet. :cool1:

Looking forward to meeting you and Lee, and everyone else. :thumbsup2

sounds like another amazing trip planned, I can't think of anywhere else I would like to spend my birthday.

your plans sound great and a wonderful time of year to go to WDW

Susan

Well, David, if you don't have an outrageously happy birthday we'll all be surprised. You and Ray know how to do Disney right and the added elements of Food and Wine, Halloween, and fall weather will give you some new fun to discover. You always share the fun with us and I'll be reading.

David your plans sound great, I too have a big birthday the same year as Disney lol! Such a great time of year to visit, we love the BWV we stayed here a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it.

ADRs Part 1

Friday marked our 180 day mark, which meant that I could finally start booking our ADRs. As we don’t have any internet access at work at the moment (thanks to a bunch of idiots deciding to nick 300m of copper wire from BT ) I had to wait until I got home. As soon as I got home I logged on to the website and put in our confirmation number so I could book for our first 10 days – I couldn’t work out what format it wanted my mobile number in for the telephone number so I just plugged in the Boardwalk Villas number and I was away. I got exactly what I wanted and this is what I have booked so far:

Fri 23rd – Sci-fi Dine In for lunch at 11:30. This seems to be one of those love it or hate it restaurants. We tried it for the first time in 2009 and I loved it – sure the food isn’t going to win any awards but the theming is great and I loved the cheesy films playing.

Sat 24th – Teppan Edo for dinner at 6:00. After reading about this in other trip reports and seeing videos I have always wanted to try it but been put off by the fact that you have to share a table. Since doing the cruise last year those worries have gone a little bit so I decided to bite the bullet and book it this year.

Mon 26th – Boma for dinner at 6:00. I originally had this one down as a breakfast but decided that other than the house fruit juice there isn’t really enough to separate breakfast here from breakfast buffets elsewhere so I made it a dinner instead where we can make the most of it. Monday is a ‘rest day’ so we’ll probably take the opportunity to get there early and explore Kidani Village, which is technically our home DVC resort but we haven’t seen it yet because it was still being built when we were last in Orlando.

Those were the only three I could book but there are another two to be booked – The Wave and Le Cellier, which can be booked on 4th April and 7th April. There’s also the segway tour which I can book next Friday.

Till next time. :goodvibes

we want to try sci-fi next trip, I think the gilrs will really love it.

good choices.:thumbsup2

Your plans sound great David ::yes:: We really enjoyed Teppan Edo when we tried it last time, and we've got an ADR there for our next trip :thumbsup2

Have a fab time :)

Two months to go

There are just under two months to go now and a few things have changed since I last posted. I got the last two ADRs booked - The Wave for dinner on 1st October at 6:15 and Le Cellier at 7:40 on the 4th October, which is a bit later than I would have liked as the plan is to have a final viewing of Illuminations on that night.

I have also got around to booking the Segway tour at Fort Wilderness but that is now going to be on Tuesday 27th September as they don't do the tour on a Wednesday. It is also the 8:30 tour, so we will have an early morning for the tour, followed by a break in the middle of the day and then a late night for MNSSHP. It does mean though that the following day is now completely free, so no need to worry about being anywhere at a certain time.

Next thing on the list was to try and get a cheap sim card for using my phone in the USA without getting stung for data roaming charges. After considering an AT&T sim and looking at various 'global' sims I eventually found a recommendation on Money Saving Expert for the Tru Sim - this charges 10p per minute for calls from the USA to the UK (not that we will be making any calls), 10p per text and, the best bit for me, 20p per MB for data, which is the best I have found anywhere. The sim costs £19.99 and includes £10 of credit, which you can top up online at any time.

Anybody who has read my Norwegian cruise trip report will know that I now have an iPad. The plan is to take that away with me and it will replace the trusty netbook that I have used for the past couple of years. I've just downloaded a word processing app for it, which I'm using to type this update, and it's surprisingly quick and easy to type on the landscape keyboard so I think I'm going to get on fine with it. I also bought a tiny wireless router from Amazon so that I can make use of the free Internet we will get in the room as DVC members and the only thing left to get is a camera kit so that I can transfer my photos onto the iPad and hopefully uploaded to Photobucket at the end of each day.

Car hire has been booked direct with Alamo and as I've completed the details for their 'save time' service I'm hoping that I'll be able to use the self-service kiosks at the airport to save having to queue up.

Now that the NFL teams and players have finally come to agreement and the 2011/12 season is definitely on I will hopefully be getting tickets for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers game on Sunday 26th September, which means unfortunately I’m going to have to drop going to the DIS meet on that day :guilty: – we’ll still be at the 1st October one though. :)

I think the planning is pretty much done now so all that's left to do is to count down the days until it's time to go!

Oh, and I must show you this picture that Dad had commissioned for my birthday:

Your plans look great. I look forward to reading your trip. I'm especially intrigued about the food and wine festival (unfortunately as a teacher I'll never get over there at that time :sad2:) and also the segway tour sounds fab!

Today marks the last milestone before we go – it’s Single Digit Dance day!!! :cool1::banana::woohoo::yay::dance3::cheer2:

A week or so ago I added a request for a high floor to our reservation and yesterday I did online check-in with Disney so everything should be ready for us when we get there.

As we’re doing MNSSHP this year we needed something to wear and, as we’re not big on costumes I decided to get t-shirts made and this is the result:

The image is more ‘plasticy’ than I was hoping for and I probably could have got just as good a result doing that myself but I like the fact that I’ve got the date on the sleeve as well.

Tickets for the Buccs game have been bought so I'm really looking forward to attending my first 'football' game in the USA and seeing how a home game should really be done instead of the Wembley games (which I've also got tickets for again.

I’ve got some films on my iPad and a backlog of podcasts on my phone so there’s plenty to keep me occupied on the flight over so I think we’re all set now.

If there’s anything reasonable I can bring back for anybody who is reading this then feel free to ask me and I’ll see what I can do, other than that I look forward to telling you all about it when we get back.:cool1::banana::woohoo::dance3::cheer2:
