Mickey has to have his teeth cleaned!

He had his annual visit with the vet today and he weights 12 whole pounds aw: But, they said he has to have his teeth cleaned. Ok. He has to be "under" for this. Ok, though, I'd like to see them try to clean his teeth without being "under"

Point: $50-55 for the anesthesia. $50-95 for the cleaning?!? Holy cow. Ok, he's the baby and if he has to have it done he will.

Have any of you ever had their cats teeth cleaned? How do they usually handle it?

The vet has never suggested having my cat's teeth cleaned...hmm...now I'm wondering why not.

I have 2 babies. Nicholas usually only needs his teeth cleaned every 2 to 3 years. He eats a combination of wet and dry food and the dry food helps to keep his teeth clean. Kimba has had bad teeth since he was a baby. He gets is done every year and often needs extractions and other items. He refuses to eat any dry food and he won't let me clean his teeth at all. Its pretty costly. You're actually getting a good price. Kimba usually runs me around $300 to $450, depending on what he has done. Also, due to their ages (13 and 15) we always have the full blood panel run prior to the dental appt to ensure they are healthy enough to make it through ok. That usually costs about $150 or so (included in the big amounts stated earlier).

It can be costly, but its very important. If gingivitas (I know, I can't spell!!) goes untreated, it can cause organ damage. Keep those pearly whites clean!!

Tina, my vet told me that since he is only 6 1/2 that he doesn't need bloodwork prior to the cleaning. Although it's down all the time, Mickey only eats dry food when he absolutely has too. He would much rather not. I guess there inlies the problem. My beloved Sandy, was 21 when we had to put him to sleep and he never had his teeth cleaned but he ate a lot of the dry food.

Oh well, since he is the baby I will do whatever I have too. aw:

MM, that's probably why my kit never needs them cleaned...she eats dry food exclusively.

Stacey, your vet is correct. Mine didn't start recommending it until they were over 10 years.
