From what I've seen & heard in interviews with the Duggar's they parent better than some parents I know with just one or two children..

I'm just going to stay happy for them:)

Indeed! Probably better that those who jugde them. :rolleyes1

shows Anna's father "passing the authority" to Josh. I assumed that meant he would now be in control of her instead of her father. I feel sure that even if Michelle or Anna were not "in the mood", it would not really matter. It is their wifely duty and that is what they not only have to do, but feel like it is what they need to do to follow their belief.

Also, did anyone see the episode where "Grampa Duggar" died? He looked very old, however, "Grandma Duggar" looks really, really young compared! In fact, she doesn't look old enough to be Jim Bob's mother to me. Maybe she was Grampa's second wife?? Does anyone know if she lives with them?

Grandpa had brain cancer, toward the end I think it really took its toll on him. Because in earlier epioseds he was not that old looking.

This is definitely not only a Christian thing, nor is strict training of children, restrictions on dating, preference for modest dress, the idea that higher education isn't always a good thing, the preference that the woman stay home with the kids, and the idea that the husband is the authority in the home. Where we live, we know several very religious families (two different religions, neither Christian) with ten plus children. All are planning to have more, and while the language/theology isn't exactly the same, they have the same view of having as many children as God sees fit to give them.

We like meeting these families, because with four kids, we're considered a large family, and a lot of people don't relate to our "lifestyle". Unfortunately, because we don't share the same religion, they're not too eager to mix with us beyond just kids playing in the park or pleasant social exchanges.

And you may be right..they may be evangelizing. I do 'run with' Christian groups, and have friends in the missionary field and even friends who have been underground in China. However, in most instances, that would not go with being on TV. Most of my Christian friends are too modest.
They also may be giving all their money to the Lord's work. I don't know that they aren't, but again, with a family like they apear to be, I would think they would not have their family on TV. But it's their lives and decisions and even with this family we may have to wait until the kids write their books. I hope it's not something they regret down the road.

(This is not a slam against DMRick - I'm just extending comments based on the last section of your comments...I actually enjoy your posts).

We do not know what they are using their earnings for...my opinion is that they are probably using it in a way that is in step with their beliefs - perhaps charity, church building, missions...who knows.

They are very eager to share their faith and TLC doesn't seem to filter it. They perhaps feel called to do this. Some faiths call it evangelizing. And as Christians, we are all called to show and model Christ's love to others. They are showing the viewing public (and every one they come in contact with as well) that they are a loving family willing to share and help and they do not shy away from talking about their faith. As a Christian, I can honestly say I don't have that kind of courage yet.

Every episode I've seen shows a very balanced family in terms of support of one another, level of happiness and joy, low level of stress and friction...generally what any family yearns for.

Not my choice in lifestyle, but it seems to be working well for them.

If you've been watching the shows, then I'm sure you saw the show where Michelle and Josh discussed that kissing wouldn't be allowed until the wedding day. Josh asked Michelle if it would be okay to hold hands when he and Anna were engaged and she said that would be okay, but that is all that happened until the wedding day. They made a big deal about waiting until the wedding day for the first kiss.
I did see that episode. Josh and Anna chose to wait until they were married, it wasn't forced on them. He wanted to make sure not to push any bounderies, but they wanted their first kiss to happen when they were married.

On another episode, the producer was asking one of the girls about not dating. She said that their parents allowed them to choose courtship. The producer said something like, "Well, what if you decide you want to date?" The Duggar girl said, "That's not an option." So while I think courtship is promoted as being a "choice," it is really the only option allowed. Not much of a choice if you ask me.
I did not see that particular interview, but I've seen others and they all seem to have chosen courtship over dating. :confused3

There is one girl, Jessa, who I think may be the rebel of the kids. She just seems to not follow exactly with everyone else, so we'll have to keep watching :happytv:

With all the kids in the world that are abused, not cared for, raised without morals I think they are a fresh look at family life & understanding what the word "family" really means.

Would they be mocked & stared at where I leave yes, sad but the realty of where we reside......but a family of that size with no debt, kids that understand & feel for the under served & do something about it, children that actually know how to play & amuse themselves without an Ipod may be people I can learn from:thumbsup2

I rather hear the Duggar's playing kickball or having a scavenger hunt on the other side of my fence, then the war I overheard Friday. Mom & a ten year old having loud ridiculous words about her not having the newest Blackberry like the rest of the kids in school this year~

My pick for a name...

Justin Other Dugger

In the People.com article, it said that Michelle didn't understand why she wasn't losing weight on her diet and why she just didn't feel right. I'd think she'd know the signs of pregnancy by now. Unless this is a "change of life baby", and her cycle is irregular.

The article said she was still nursing the last baby. That will make your cycle very irregular for some people. So she may well have not recognized the signs of pregnancy.

I hope she has a healthy baby and enjoys her children! They seem to be a very nice family. Not the lifestyle I would choose, but who am I to judge?

I didnt read all the posts so this may have already been answered. While I think that children are wonderful...I think 19 is a bit extreme! I heard that because he was a State Senator he and his family have free health care from the state...is this true? I know that people are saying that the Duggar's pay for everything, they are not getting welfare etc..but do they all get free health care? Just wondering......What the heck are they going to do when they all want to go to college!!!! Im going broke with 1 in college!

I wonder how on earth she is able to schedule and keep up with everyone's doctor and dentist appointments. Do any of the kids wear braces? Do any of them wear glasses? I don't really watch them so I don't remember.

There was an episode when they took all the kids to the dentist on the same day. Two of the girls needed extractions that day. I guess the dentist sets aside a day to accommodate the Duggars.

oh that's easy...all the kids have "buddies" and she is only really responsible for taking care of the youngest..

This is the part that angers me to NO end!! It's so sad that these kids childhood is stolen from them because of their parents selfish desire to keep procreating! It's just really cruel IMO. I heard that creepy husband make a comment one time about music.... he said "It controls you and this is why we do not allow it in our home." Yes Jim Bob (that name reminds me of the Waltons! LOL! :rotfl2:), but you have no problem putting your kids on T.V. and giving them NO choice in raising YOUR kids! It's just all strange and pathetic! IMO of course.

Ummm, they probably will not be attending college... they don't even allow computers in their home. How on earth would they get through school not knowing how to type?? My BA is in Criminology and my last year was nothing but term PAPERS! It was terrible!:sad2:

Um, they DO have a computer. They have limited access to the internet, but they all use it for games and email. The oldest daughter used it to make a slideshow of Grandpa Duggar when he passed.

Just curious. When did you ever see the Duggar girls wearing pants? I've seen the little ones wearing bike shorts under their skirts, but never the older girls.

Josh was taking college classes online at one of the colleges that Bill Gotherd runs. There is also an online midwife program associated with Gotherd. While the Duggars say that the kids can go to college, it's never been made clear that they will be allowed to attend a public institution with no religious affiliation and actually take classes with other young people. I would be very surprised if they were.

This is exactly the way I've seen it too. There's really no "option" in anything. Trust me.... in a few years ONE of those kids will escape from this compound and write a tell all book about how much they resent these 2 parents and how they feel like they missed out on alot growing up.:thumbsup2
