I bought a couple of poster frames at Michael's this weekend, buy one get one free, One of the frames ended up being the wrong size. How does a return work in this case? Am I just out of luck?

You won't get any money back. And if the one you keep is the more expensive one, you may have to pay the difference.

Ask if you can exchange the one that is the wrong size for the right size.
I looked and they don't appear to carry the size I need which is probably why I picked up the wrong size to begin with.

I looked online and the frames appear to be 30% off right now, instead of BOGO. I might buy the size I am keeping and then return it along with the one I don't want. I will get a net back of $7 but it is better than nothing.

What??? If I am not getting any money back, then I just keep the one I don't need. And why would I have not pay THEM to return it? They already discount the less expensive one, so I already paid full price on the more expensive one.

Each chain probably has their own rules about returns/exchanges. They are wise to some people who make a career out of trying to return some item and pocketing 'free' money. That is partly why most stores will only give you store credit (not cash) for any returned item and if it has been on sale in the prior x days, you only get the lowest price offered. Stores tend to require you have the receipt so they can verify you didn't buy it elsewhere at some lower price and are trying to profit from that. Most stores can look up a prior purchase to see if it involved any sort of special.

Your receipt should have the value of each one-- if they were buy one get one free they would each be charged at 50% off.

The receipt has the value of one as $39.99 and the other at $0.00 (reg. 29.99) (the one I want to return). I know a lot of stores who do just as you described. And if I had bought them online for store pick-up they were listed as being 50% off vs BOGO in the store.

I have the receipt but the receipt shows the value of the item I want to return as $0.00 because of the BOGO. I was always gong to buy the frame I am keeping. The BOGO prompted me to also get the second frame. I was hoping that Michael's might do as some other store do and pro-rate the discount between the items purchased.

They might refund $10 if you paid for the more expensive frame and are keeping the cheaper one.

Except I am keeping the more expensive one and do not need the cheaper one.
Ok, then no refund since you are keeping the one you paid for. Why would you get a refund for something that you weren’t charged for? Maybe they will let you choose another frame at the same or lesser value to replace the “free” one, but you’re not entitled to any money back. Not sure why this is so hard to understand.

You could buy a frame bigger than the poster then mat it. Brings the size down and often gives more depth to the poster’s imagery.

I don't know why you're being so rude to her. If it was bogo and she wants to swap out the free one for another free one that's cheaper than the more expensive one she paid for then no harm no foul. I'm not sure why this is so hard to understand. If she just wants to return one frame then she has a good game plan. We're talking picture frames here, not anything critical. Good lord.

OP- I think your plan of ordering the expensive one at 30% off and returning both of the other frames together is probably your best bet.

A lot of places when they have a BOGO will actually discount both items proportionately. So I buy two items one for $50, one for $40, they will actually charge $30 & $20. I was simply asking if Michael's does something similar. The way I see it I paid $50 for two frames. It is not like it was a free with purchase. Buy a frame and get a log key chain for free and then I am wanting to return the key chain that I truly did NOT pay for. To get the BOGO you had to "purchase" two items.

What is truly hard to understand is why are attacking me for simply ASKING how a specific retailer handles it.
