I went to Michaels today and got some good deals, but as I was shopping I noticed that the store was uncomfortably warm. When I checked out, I commented to the cashier that the store seemed hot. She said that they have done away with air conditioning. Really????? Is this a corporate decision? Are all the stores without a/c? I understand the need for businesses to cut costs, but it seems extreme to me to totally go without air conditioning. It sure didn't make me feel like lingering to browse!

Interesting . . . I noticed last week that my Michaels had cut back on lighting -- only 1/2 the lights were on in the store -- sure makes it tough to see the real color of paper and don't even think about matching up cardstock. . . . I'll have to check out the A/C next visit. A Hobby Lobby is going in across the street by the end of summer . . . could it mean the end for Michael's??? Could be in DeKalb, IL anyhow . . . .

Our local did the same on cutting the a/c(here in Peoria, IL).

The employees were standing a corner around a hand-held fan and complaining. I certainly won't be going back there to shop until they turn the a/c back on. I think it is completely insane to cut their a/c in parts of the country where it gets 90 and higher in the summer with high humidity. I don't shop places where I'm sweating.

They want to cut costs, great, but to do it in a way where they won't be getting customers, not exactly the best business move in the book. They already have enough competition and driving the customers to their competition is all this cutting costs plan will accomplish. Hobby Lobby and JoAnns will be getting my business for the time being.

Seriously? They aren't using the A/C? No way will I shop in a store that has no A/C in the height of summer. Even in New England, we get well over 90 degrees and humid. I can't imagine what it would be like in the south!

that's crazy!!!

Guess they will go out of business soon enough. People won't shop there and good luck hiring people too.

That is beyond crazy. How can they expect to have any customers during the summer months. I know here in NH it can get pretty darn hot. I'll have to check out my local store to see if they are also doing this.

How can the heat and humidity be good for paper? I know when we leave paper at school and the humidity gets high in the summer the paper gets wet and is unusable.
I will have to check out my store next week.
S :)

I didn't notice this at my last visit to Michael's. I will have to check again, but I think this warrants a complaint to the home office. They need to know we aren't going to shop in the heat of a store! What about winter months? I would assume they would not be using heat in their stores either!

The last time I was at our local store (Geneva IL, lots of IL people here!) I noticed it was rather warm but thought maybe they just didn't turn on the air yet. Sounds like a bad move on Michael's part - I wouldn't want to spend much time in a stuffy, hot store... let alone work there. I feel bad for the employee.!

That's funny because I was in Michael's yesterday and it was so hot I thought it was me.

I can't beleive they would do that! It was in the mid-90's all weekend here, heat index in the 100's-no way am I shopping in a store with no AC!!!:scared1:

I haven't been in Michael's in awhile but I was in JoAnn's on Saturday and it was cold in there. I needed a sweater (it was heat index 100 on Saturday, too). To save money DH sets our A/C to 82 when we're not home. I told him it's damaging my stickers. I keep the fan on in my craft room 24/7.

I think a lot of places are cutting back on A/C. I was in a couple stores in Hollywood Studios last weekend and it was downright HOT in there!

Are they in financial trouble?

I will not shop where I have to sweat....No way, no how. That's like turning off the heat in the winter, it's stupid.

I can see not setting it so low that your teeth chatter but I will not go if it's so hot that I sweat.

Just chiming in to say I shopped in the Concord, NH Michael's store today and it was just fine.... not noticeably warm. That said, it hasn't been terribly hot around here lately, although today is beautiful. Just wanted to share.....P

If mine doesn't have the air on, I will not shop there either. If a store it too warm, I leave. I cannot stand being hot and have out air set at 65 during the day and 62 at night, yes we are crazy but I can't sleep when I am hot. If I find my Ms has no A/C I will be contacting corporate because that is unacceptable.
