Hello

Was wondering if anyone knows roughly how long it takes to drive to miami from orlando. My mum has seen south beach on the TV and now thinks it would be a good idea to go for the day - is this possible? or would we be better doing an overnight?

Thanks

Kirsty

My father lives in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, which is about a 30-35 minute drive to miami according to my memory of dozing off to sleep in the backseat of his truck. :)

We can usually drive from Ft. Lauderdale to Orlando and WDW in about 4 hours, including a one-hour rest stop for lunch and a bathroom break. I hope this helps you, have a fun vacation!

Took us 3 1/2 hours last time we went - I would recommend it as there isn't just Miami, you have Fort Lauderdale , Palm Beach and Boca Raton all within easy reach.
The A1A coastal road is a particularly nice drive, but it would take you longer so best using the Florida Turnpike.

I would advise you to stay overnight would be a long day driving there and back.

It also took us 3 1/2 hours on the Turnpike last April. I wouldn't be inclined to drive all that way and back in a day just for South Beach, though - I was totally underwhelmed.

As others have said the Turnpike is loads quicker but if you want to see the coast etc, then take the A1A route. It's much nicer!

take the turnpike for sure, we stay in Miami in North Beach and the drive time to Orlando is about 4 - 4/12 hours.

south beach would add on another 30 - 40 minutes

islandmum makes a good point. Whilst the drive between Orlando and Miami took us about 3 1/2 hours on the Turnpike (we went to the airport to drop off our hire car pre-cruise), getting out of Miami from South Beach on the return journey was a stop-start nightmare, as was the stretch of the I-95 we had to take before joining the Turnpike.

Going to stop off in Miami for a couple of hours at lunch time on our way down to Key Largo.
Can anyone tell me a nice place to park up and maybe have a spot of lunch:confused3
Was thinking of South Beach myself:surfweb:

South beach can be very difficult to park, but you may be ok on Collins Avenue, I have a list of restaurants I have kept here (have never been in any of them mind!).

Hubby and I are doing two nights in Miami, does anyone have any suggestions on what to do ?

South Beach is most famous because of its Art Deco buildings. They're nice to see during the day but they really come alive at night because of all the neon lighting. So you definitely want to spend at least one night there before driving back to Orlando. Also the people-watching and of course restaurants and night clubs are most alive at night.

The preferred route is Florida's Turnpike as it is the most direct route and you can do the journey in under 4 hours. It is a toll road though and carries less traffic than I-95 which is free and thus far more crowded.
