Miami to Orlando: Fly vs. Car Rental One way

Heading to south Florida and probably flying into Ft. Lauderdale (or Miami) to visit my mother in a couple of months. Since I'll be close, I would also like to stop on my way back at WDW. Trying to decide whether to fly to Orlando from south Florida or to rent a car one way. Spirit has $17 fares from Ft. Lauderdale, but with the reviews I'm hearing and all the add on fees for luggage, etc., it doesn't look like that great of a deal.

Does anyone have any suggestions for this short trip: Flying or renting a car and paying the one way drop off fee? I would then be flying from Orlando back to Chicago.

Several rental companies do not charge a drop off fee within the state of Florida. Just quickly checking Alamo for a 24hr rental picking up in Miami and dropping in Orlando is like $40.00 with taxes.

I have done this before with Thrifty and there is no drop off fee. Use corporate #004M001010 which is the Orlando Magicard number. Don't forget, you will have turnpike tolls in the neighborhood of $15.
