I'll jump in here and defend Miami to the hilt!!! We never have a car for the days we are there, just get a cab from the airport to the hotel. We stayed at the holiday inn port of miami (much cheaper than being on Miami Beach) right opposite Bayside.
The local buses are great and cheap - we went to Lincoln Road Mall one day (had a very nice lunch at Nexxt Cafe) and then walked the beach. Next day we took the bus again all the way to Aventura Mall, did a lot of shopping before taking in a film then getting the bus back. It was great because it meant DH could have a couple of drinkies as he's usually the one that drives everywhere.
