MHP costume thread

We had a little trouble thinking of something this year, but we still wanted it to be Disney related.

We decided to go as Frankenweenie characters but we haven't quite finished the costumes or decided if we want to do it in grayscale. I'll be Victor, but it has to be Frankenweenie-ish so I'm making a felt lab coat that I will be wearing backwards instead of a regular barrier lab coat and I will attach the dog to me somehow. My wife is going as the weird girl, she is currently still stitching flowers on her dress.

My daughter and I are Disney Bounding. She is going to be Snow White and I am going to be Minnie. My son is going to be Sorcerer Mickey and my hubs is just wearing a Chewbacca shirt!

So my daughter is wearing a yellow skirt and blue shirt with a poison apple necklace and handmade Snow White ears. I'm wearing red capris with a black top, Minnie ears and necklace. My son has ears with the sorcerers hat and a red robe. I'll probably also make him a sorcerer Mickey shirt to wear under it.

I made an awesome Haunted Mansion shirt to wear on a park day and I'm regretting not doing a Haunted Mansion costume of some sort....

Finished making my Mary Poppins hat today, and found my husband a bert hat! My goal for the rest of the weekend is to add a red waistband/bow to my skirt, make DH a kerchief, and me a bow tie. Bought the fabric and thread today as well. yay!!

Just a tip for everyone: have a few weather related adjustments and variations ready for your costumes before your party dates. October weather in Southern California can be so odd. We've been to MHP in many different kinds of weather, ranging from nice and cool, to off-and-on downpours, drizzle, extreme heat (85*F after 10pm), etc. It only took one party in weird weather to convince us to have a backup plan every time. Things with layers work well. So does having a dry pair of shoes and socks stored in a locker. Now we always have the "plan A" costumes and the "plan B" outfits.

I'm currently working on my DDs costume. She's bounding as Vanessa from the little mermaid. I'm making 1930's woman's slacks in lilac, she will wear a lilac singlet as well. Over the singlet, she's wearing a deep purple collared shirt unbuttoned enough to show the singlet. She'll wear suspenders and a shell necklace.

As for me, I was going to bound as Maleficent but with 23 days until we travel to the states, I'm not sure I will be able to get it together. We will see.

I can't wait to see all of the costumes - I think this will definitely be a highlight of our first DLR trip. As for our family - as fun as it is to dress up, 3 of my kids so far have their actual halloween costumes from the disney store (DS4 Kylo Ren, DD8 Rey and DD10 Princess Leia) ... but for our trip to the west coast I've decided to just put us in matching shirts for party day - costumized by a great shop on Etsy. I will post a pic when they come in but we'll be in Halloween purple and each of us will have a hand painted image of their favorite character on their shirt...all holding a pumpkin treat or treat bucket!

This is fabulous advice. I suggest everyone have a similar plan for any halloween party. On a number of number of halloweens my nephew, who has no tolerance for being hot and sweaty, refused to wear his costume after about 3 houses of trick or treating on halloween night. He did the rest of the night in shorts and a tshirt and every time someone asked him what his costume was he would just point to his mom who was carrying the costume. This happened with a hamburger, tin man, and dragon.

Since Im a bit too penny-pinchy to buy multiple costumes and I'm nowhere near crafty enough to make a backup I try to go with a hot weather costume that can be added to to make it a cold weather costume. I bought a Sally costume which is a pretty thin dress a yarn wig and stitches sleeves and a stitches collar. It was 20 bucks on amazon. I added a pair of stitches leggings to it from Torrid. I can where a cami under it for more layering warmth as well. So if its 90 degrees at our 6pm party start time I will keep the sleeves, collar and leggings in my park bad and not wear the yarn Wig and just spray my hair with the red hair spray and add a few stitches here and there with costume make up.

I have a similar plan for the kids.

I also plan to wear my comfy park shoes that don't really look that great with my costume no matter what the weather since those are a whole different kind of necessity.

We plan to have a "Year of Disney" starting with this coming New Year's and we definitely plan to do another Halloween party. We had a blast at MNSSHP in 2014. Here are our costumes:

Absolutely Fan.Tas.Tic costumes.

Here's a bit of mine - still being worked on! I am SOOO excited! I emailed and they called back and said as long as it didn't drag, and that I may have to go through extra screening, it was fine. :)

Thank you for asking about floor length gowns. I was kind of worried that they would be really strict on it. This will be our 4th year as the 3 Good Fairies and Maleficent and we have floor length dresses. I am willing to deal with a little extra security screening in exchange for not having to come up with new costumes in such a short amount of time.

Your dress is beautiful!!! Are you making it yourself?

Trying to debate between ghost bride haunted mansion and groom with hubby and wreck it Ralph and Vanellope, choices !!

ooooooh tough decisions! Both are excellent choices! I guess it just depends on how much time you want to spend getting ready (at least in my eyes). Ralph and Vanellope are pretty easy, quick, put together costumes. I would think the Ghost bride and groom, you would be doing makeup and hair - might be a little more complex. I think both options are pretty cool. :goodvibes

My favorite part of MHP is seeing all of the amazing costumes. I love seeing how inventive people get.

I think it would be fun to do the couple because I could use face makeup easy on me none really needed on my hubby, maybe a red line around neck or ribbon/tie to symbolize the axe beheading lol.

I was thinking using spray paint to give thrift store vest a dusty look and add bagged shredded cobwebs to that also. Pants would be easy and a top hat for him and I'm sure I could find a flowy dress I could shred some too. We both love haunted mansion so may see how much I can do in the next 3 weeks.

We just decided to go today and haven't thought about costumes. Loving the ideas shared here.
