can i take the free bus from mgm to downtown disney? what about back to mgm from dd?

They do not have direct bus service from the parks to or from Downtown Disney. This is because people try to park there for free and go to the parks. You would have to transfer at a resort.

ok so if i left mgm and went to a hotel i could take tyhe hotel bus to dd? which would be the closest hotel to downtown disney that i could get to from mgm?

Well, you've got another choice, which I think will serve you better: Take a bus to the closest hotel to DTD, and then take a bus from there (or walk) to DTD. That would be the new Saratoga Springs Resort.

The SSR and OKW guests are already complaining about people using the above suggestion and crowding their busses.

Yes, and I'm one of them. :confused3

Walk over to the Swan and take that bus. Or walk over to the BW and take that bus to DTD. You can also take the boat from Disney Studios to both the Swan and BW.

Okay, my bad. Just forget the Saratoga Springs Resort idea, and forget the BoardWalk Resort idea, and just take a taxi cab. :tilt:

As already mentioned, you can boat or walk over to the Epcot resort area. The walk is about 15 minutes. The boat ride is longer since you may have to wait for the boat. The boat dock is to the left when you leave the Disney Studios. The walkway to the Boardwalk area (where the Epcot resorts are) continues straight when you leave the Studios with the water to your left and the parking lot to your right. The water will always be on your left as you walk away from the Studios and the parking lot. After a few minutes you will walk under an overpass and then you will be at the outer limits of the Boardwalk resort. Keep walking either to the Boardwalk or Swan or Dolphin. Walk through the resort lobby and out to the bus stop area. There are buses to DTD, AK, MK, and the water parks from there. You can also get a bus from the Yacht and Beach clubs but they are a few minutes walk past the Boardwalk and Swan/Dolphin.

I've read SSR guests complaining about non-resort guests using theme park-SSR buses to get to DTD.

Would fewer bus passengers mean less crowded buses or just fewer buses?

Probably fewer busses, but that's not the issue. Rather, the additional passengers result in more busses, which means higher costs, which means higher dues. So when folks not staying at a DVC resort use that resort as a connecting bus terminal, that results in costs which are paid, to a great extent, by DVC members.

My next question, really a question I haven't the slightest idea what the answer is, are DVC members charged based on the number of buses that are dispatched, based on the number of rooms (or even maximum occupancy) in the DVC resort or is it based on the actual number of guests staying in the resort?

The costs for operating the resort, including its transportation, are allocated between Disney and DVC according to a formula, AFAIK. It is not a sliding scale based on utilization or occupancy. They allocate the actual dollars.
