I just read that the "shop" under the hat is closed until mid-April.
Does anyone have any info on what they are doing???

I had assumed that it would stay a shop, but then I read it was closed. Are they just getting rid of the "100 Years" stuff?

Rehab a hat..........puh leeze . Just tear the ugly thing down. What a shame that that beautiful replica of the Chinese Theatre that used to provide for such a pleasant view has to be blocked by that monstrosity.

I heard that they are going to put a little-bitty "off the shelf" carnival spinner ride
IN the store to get their teenage demographics up. It's rumored to be called "The Little Mermaid's Little Bitty Spinner" The price is rumored to be in the $10-$25,000 range.
Too bad the seat belt restraining system makes it necessary for the rider to be at least 72", though.

Roy

P.S. They will also sell plush and french fries out of the sorcerer's hat.

Hey - don't make too many jokes about $25,000 shopping mall kiddie rides. You'll ruin a lot of Disney expansion plans...

I think the hats growing on me.....now how am i gonna walk around lolololol.

monstrosity

great great word.

maybe they'll rehab it with princess stuff

Love the Hat. Hate the theatre (except for the ride within)
I suppose it we have to disagree on somethibg it might as well be the @#$%^&ing hat . But really, what is better "show"? The time/place feel of the theatre, or the big honkin' corporate 100 Years sales symbol that is the hat?

Fair enough, Scoop.
Don't get me wrong, they did a real nice job replicating it, but everytime I walked into DS, that theatre just never seemed to be the right kind of weenie.
It is always fascinating how two people can get very different impressions from the very same thing. To me it always seemed like MGM had a very good old Hollywood thing going. That was the intent when the park was designed and built. From the architecture all along Hollywood Blvd, the billboards, the old cars, the period comedic actors of streetmosphere, right up to the Chinese Theatre, complete with the old movie music playing in the area around the theatre. To me that created the perfect atmosphere. Now it is somehow disjointed. The "weenie" at the end of the street that completed the picture is no longer in the picture. Perhaps the old time feel of Hollywood Blvd loses a little effect as it is now not part of a larger picture. The music might be there, but does it fit with a socerers hat?

As for Fantasia "Defining the Studio's", did you always feel that way, or is that a byproduct of things like Fantasmic and the hat itself, relatively new things? I thought Sorcery in the Sky was the best fireworks display on property, but I never thought Fantasia defined the Studios. I'm not saying it did or didn't, and no one can be wrong about their opinions or the way they see things. Just curious.

Hey, to me, Fantasia defines Disney's studio more than a licensed right to use an MGM theatre as the primary focal point or weenie.
Huh? What's "MGM" about the famous Hollywood Boulevard 1927 landmark, Grauman's Chinese Theatre? It's the most famous movie theater in the world. It isn't now (and never was) a part of MGM.

Sure, some MGM movies premiered at the Chinese, including the Wizard of Oz. But great movies from all studios premiered at the Chinese Theatre, including Disney's Mary Poppins, Disney's Love Bug, and many others.

The reproduction of the Chinese adds (or, I should say, added) greatly to the streetscape of Hollywood Boulevard at Disney-MGM Studios Theme Park.

In comparison, the hat looks like a prop from Disney's All Star Resorts or Disney's Pop Century Resort. It does nothing to put you in another time and place.

I think the NY perspective skyline looks great at the end of the street.

I think the TOT looks great at the end of the street.

I thought the Chinese theatre looked good at the end of the street (I didn't love the building itself, but it seemed to belong there to keep the illusion going).

I also love the look of the hat, but to me it seems in the wrong location. It stands out too much as an after thought just as much as the Mickey's hand does in EPCOT over SE.

"I got Disney T-shirts here, Get'chr T-shirts! We have 4 in stock! Da Tree-o-Life, dis Space Earth thing, dat castle place and da water towa"

Water tower's and Chinese theaters don't sell t-shirts.

They covered up one well-placed and scaled illusion to sell "stuff".

The real reason that the Mann's reproduction needed blocking actually had nothing to do with the parks, at all. Disney owns and renovated (at no small expense, I might add) the El Capitan theatre that's like, across the street from Mann's. Mann's competes directly with a Disney-owned product.

There is no way Disney wants an advertisement for the competition on their weenie.

Thank you... thank you very much. Please, you're too kind.

Just tear the ugly thing down

My problem with the BAH is location, location, location....

Of course, location was probably at least 1/2 the reason they built the thing in the first place (see the Head's post). The other half can be found in Mr. Cricket's post.

Geez, that was easy! Thanks, guys!
