So, living in Brownsville your employers want you to be multi-lingual to better communicate with their clients? Hmmm...sounds like good business, after all, if you feel immigrants should be forced to learn English, why shouldn't you be "forced" to learn Spanish if that is what an employer desires? What's good for the goose...

tikilyn said:Because they have VISA'S! If they stay past that visa expiration date then they are here ILLEGALLY! It's as simple as that. They are welcome to come here on vacation with a visa. That's what they are doing and there are some that get the visa as a way to inter the US and stay here illegally.

Feralpeg said:Maybe, but I found it a little disconcerting when I lived in Missouri and the first language that came up on the Bank Of America ATM was Spanish. I had to hit the English button to get the screens in English. Believe me. Missouri is not a predominately Spanish speaking area.
I find it interesting that those who are arguing the most against the wall are those living in the border areas such as Texas. Maybe it has been so much a part of their lives for so long that they don't see any issues with it. I would think growing up in that area, Spanish would be second nature. Just a guess. They probably have many friends who are illegals. Again, just a guess. It is those of us now in areas being taken over in the last few years by illegals that are for the wall.

Chuck S said:And building an $8 billion fence will stop that?
tikilyn said:Yes I do believe that English is the official language of the Us. It's taught in our school systems and is a mandatory class. I don't remember going to school and being taught Spanish class (that was an elective). Just because something is multi-lingual doesn't mean that English is not the language of the US. We're just nice to the lazy immigrants that refuse to learn our language.
tikilyn said:Probably not. But it will slow down the illegals coming across. I don't think that the fence is the answer and I never said it was! I would rather see that 8 billion go toward newer and better equipment to our Border Patrol Agents, Customes, and to the immigration inspections. Oh and hiring more Agents to work really well too.

You might want to check with Ask Yahoo first.tikilyn said:Yes I do believe that English is the official language of the Us. It's taught in our school systems and is a mandatory class. No, the United States has never had an official national language -- and throughout its history many languages have been spoken along with English. A quick search on "United States official language" led us head-on into controversy. Many citizens feel strongly that the government should establish English as the official language of the United States, a view expressed in the mission statement of English First. Other Americans believe that linguistic diversity is a key aspect of our heritage and that English-only laws are motivated by fear and by false stereotypes about non-native speakers, a view supported in this ACLU Briefing Paper.
We learned more about the ongoing debate by visiting the Language Policy > English As Official Language category of Yahoo!'s Directory. Web sites on both sides of the issue report that the current "English Only" movement began in 1981, when Canadian-born S. I. Hayakawa, a language scholar and Republican senator from California, sponsored a constitutional amendment to make English the official language. In 1983 Hayakawa helped found U.S. English, a non-partisan organization that lobbies for English-only legislation, and supports related initiatives to encourage English literacy for immigrants.
We found balanced coverage of current and pending language legislation on journalist James Crawford's vast and well-informed Language Policy Web Site & Emporium. Crawford has been covering language policy for more than fifteen years.
Here are some relevant bits of information from various sites:
-- $1.5 billion is a rough estimate of how much the U.S. government spends annually on language education. Some programs are designed to replace minority languages with English, other funds are spent in support of "foreign" language studies to improve communication in the competitive global marketplace.
-- English Language Advocates reports that nearly 17 million Americans admit that they not do speak English very well, that the number of Americans who do not speak English has soared since the 1990 census, and that 18% of Americans do not speak English at home.
-- Before Columbus, roughly 300 languages were spoken here -- now almost half of those are extinct. Crawford projects that in another 50 years only 20 indigenous North American languages will be alive and spoken.
Chuck S said:I'm sorry, but you are incorrect, your "belief" does not make it law, there is no Official Language in the US. There has never been an "official" language law passed by the US. Some states have passed laws, and they are under review. Texas is not one of those states, so there is no official language in Brownsville. The schools teach in English because it is the most prevalent language, not because it is any type of "official" language. They also teach Spanish, English as a "2nd Language", French, and German.

Chuck S said:1)Perhaps the last person to use the ATM selected Spanish and it defaulted to the last selection? I'm sorry it was such an inconvenience to you to push the English button.
2) Your issue should be with Bank of America?
3) I did not grow up in Texas, I grew up in Los Angeles
4) It does not change the fact that Americans are willing to hire illegals for less than a comparable American wage, regardless of the law...this applies to huge coprorations, as well. Wal-mart was found guilty if this not long ago.
6) Many homeowners in border areas, especially Sr. Citizens hire illegal "day workers" to help out with yard work or household chores...services they would not normally be able to afford.
Feralpeg said:1. No, it came up that way every time.
2. I agree. It is a Bank Of America issue, but why would Spanish be the default in he US?
3. I would think the illegal immigrant situation in LA would be fairly similar to Texas. LA is still pretty close to the border.
4. I really don't care what companies do. I don't and would never hire an illegal. It is against the law. There coming to this country without following the proper channels is against the law. How would you feel about people streaming in from the middle east without clearance? Would you mind having to learn Arabic. I'm not trying to say anything about middle eastern people. It is just a comparable situation. Our immigration laws are in place for a reason. They should be followed. If companies or individuals are hiring illegals, they should be fined big time. If it means a rise in prices due to these companies having to hire non-illegals. That's fine with me. JMHO.
