Mexican Riviera Cruise 03/27/2011

As my husband's family is from Japan and Hawaii and many live now in California- my heart and prayers have been going out to those in Hawaii and Japan, please stay safe for all those on the west coasts...

So, I was curious how Tsunamis (since they are becoming more common recently) would effect our cruise, and if anyone was wondering- here is what I found...

"As Hawaii and the U.S. west coast prepares for a tsunami following the 8.9 earthquake that struck Japan early this morning, it’s natural to wonder about the safety of cruise ships sailing in the region. According to CNN, boat owners are moving their vessels out to sea where they’ll be safe and I’m sure the same is true of cruise ships sailing in the area.

A cruise ship docked in port is in potential danger when a tsunami strikes because enormous waves could smash it against the pier.

But a ship at sea, even small ones, should be perfectly safe since, before it strikes land, the wave is only a few meters high.

The Real Threat to Cruise Ships

Think Poseidon, a dreadful but memorable movie about a passenger ship hit by a freak wave that comes out of nowhere. A rogue wave is virtually impossible to detect. Imagine being at sea in perfect weather when a wave the size of a ten story building appears on the horizon.

In 1942, the original Queen Mary was broadsided by a 92 ft. rogue wave and listed 52 degrees before righting herself. Queen Elizabeth 2 was struck by a 95 ft. wave in September, 1995. In 2005, NCL’s Norwegian Dawn was hit by three 70 ft. rogue waves while sailing in the Atlantic Ocean off Georgia. According to Wikipedia, several decks were flooded, a few passengers slightly hurt.

While a tsunami is terrifying to those potentially in the path of the enormous sea surge, if you’re at sea aboard a cruise ship you’ll be fine. Fortunately rogue waves are rare, certainly nothing I want to encounter."

Thank you for post and your prayers Mommy22Cuties!

A lot of us only lost sleep. Oahu and the island of Hawaii had water damage but still no reported injuries. We got the "All Clear" about an hour ago.

We're still praying for Japan and their tough times ahead.

I think one of our cruisers is going/or may be in Japan too. I pray for them and all in Japan. I'm so glad that there was no injuries in HI and you all are OK.

Glad to hear you are ok DisneyHonu! Hoping Hawaii's damage remains minimal, and Japan's earthquakes will subside, so help & relief efforts can begin to pour in. :) I'm glad we are all on here to get to know our fellow cruisers, be of support to eachother, and get ready for/share excitement for our upcoming Wonder-ful cruise! :thumbsup2;)

My sister and family are in Okinawa, Japan - which is at the very southern tip, and a long way from the epicenter. They are all fine and the wave was only a couple feet high there.

We are a GO for CRUISING!!

:cutie::hippie::worship::cool2:popcorn:::woohoo:

WOO HOO!!!
Getting into the "Run around to get everything done 2 weeks before cruise" time! Sooo much to do, soooo little time! :scared1::rotfl2:
If anyone has interesting, handy things you're packing, please share! I'm bound to forget something...;)

Had a dream I forgot our passports!! :scared1: Oh noooooooo..........

Oh no, did you go set them in a folder with your other paper work that is needed. I would hate to forget something like that.

I have a plastic envlope type folder I'm taking with required paper work and it will bring back other paper form of keepsakes. Navigators etc.

We are down to 14 days.

Let the count down begin...

If anyone could post a list of the paperwork we need to bring, that would be so helpful. I've read it here on DIS at different times the past 6 months, but did not see it compiled in one spot. :worship: I can't read a whole lot at a time, so I've been trying to limit how much searching I do here a day at one time, or my eyes start getting blurry & a huge headache! I get on for a bit here, then a bit there.
Everyone almost ready??!! (Ooooh, not me, gotta get goin on it!) :thumbsup2:yay::woohoo::cheer2:

My DH did most of the online booking & forms. But he is very busy trying to get all his cases caught up/finished/worked on before the cruise so he doesn't have to worry about or work on ANY of them while on our cruise. So I'm trying to collect all the important paperwork we need, and keep a little journal of all the important tips/advice/info. Your postings will help me alot, thanks!

:cloud9::cutie:I was hoping to spend the day in Cabo at a Resort - swimming in pools, swim in the ocean... does anyone have any recommendations? ;)

The better the pool and beach the better!:cutie::yay:

Susan - I'm going sans husband, too!

The ocean can be pretty rough in Cabo:sad1:, especially if small children are involved. The public beach closest to the dock and marina is Medano Beach. It is about a 20-30 minute walk from the ship. You can pick up maps at one of the several information booths lining the marina boardwalk. You can also take a taxi for around $10 (get some people to share with you). Most of the resorts along Medano Beach are timeshares, with varying policies for cruiser use. Some will sell an all inclusive day pass for anywhere between $50-75. Others will allow you day use if you purchase food and drinks. The ME and Finisterra used to allow cruisers that privilege, but I am not sure if they still do. Best thing is to contact the resort by email to inquire about their day use policies. Policies change since there are literally thousands of cruisers hitting Cabo on almost a daily practice.

All the beach bars along Medano Beach will allow free use of their chairs/loungers and umbrellas with the purchase of food and alcohol. There are many vendors offering glass bottom boat rides, jet skis and parasailing right in front of Mango Deck/Billigans/Baja Cantina, which is also party central on Medano Beach:banana::banana:

Another option is to take one of the water taxis to Lovers Beach. You can get a short scenic tour and then be dropped off to spend however long you want at the beach. You will have to rent an umbrella. There are vendors selling drinks and maybe some food. You can catch a water taxi back to the dock - there are many just hovering around. The water there is very rough, especially on the Pacific side. A few months ago a couple of Canadians drowned on the Pacific side.

A better choice for a resort and beach day is Puerto Vallarta. You can walk from the ship to the Crown Paradise or Krystal. Both have nice pools and beaches. Both will allow cruisers if they purchase food and drinks. They may also have a day pass option.

I hope that I have given you some good options.

Hi Betty!!

Wasn't sure if you were planning to join us at the cruise meet.... I'm making name tags for everyone. If you are, please send me the names of everyone traveling with you so no one gets left out.

Thanks!! Lori

For those that may be coming in early and looking for something to do, the Aquarium of the Pacific and Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach are both offering discounts right now through the following site:
http://www.discoverlosangeles.com/thearts/

There are also many other discounts in the LA area on this site right now too.

So quiet on the board these days.... I'm guessing this means we are all packing, and crafting, and shopping, and working clear up til the big day!!

Just wanted to check in a say HI!

HI LORI! And everyone! Ok, wanted to let everyone know, the FE is now complete, and the join option has expired. So go with the list we have, and can't wait to see everyone at the meet! Please be sure to be there if you do not have a cabin # assigned yet, so we can write it in when we hand out the FE assignments. We just surprised our kids last night with the cruise! :wizard::yay::scared1::banana: (They are still in shock....) Time to do some serious packing! :thumbsup2

Hi CalDisfans,

How exciting for your family!!! Glad to know you can pack without having to do it secretly ;)

As for the FE list, there were some people that did not reply to my PMs so not sure if there was ever confirmation that they were still participating. Does your list include those families that never confirmed?

Thanks! ! Lori

Hi Lori,
Thank you for the invitation to the cruise meet. I don't think that we will be able to drag DGD (14), DGD (6) and DGS (4) away from the pool and slide to attend. I hope that we will be able to meet some of you during the cruise.
