Rather than go into a long detailed trip report I will post a few of my thoughts and suggestions about the Mexican Riviera Cruise from March 6 – 13.
First, I am not fond of the Enterprise Car Rental system at San Pedro. They pride themselves in their “personalized service” but having to wait in line so they can walk through the car return seems to take longer than it should. In the end it did not matter because I really don’t think you need to get to the pier early. In my opinion there is no reason to get there before Noon.
Why do people get there early? I can’t figure it out. We got there after 12pm and I was very stressed up until that after reading this board about needing to be there at 9:30am. Check in was a breeze with no lines. They started boarding sometime between 12pm and 12:30pm. We had boarding card 17 and they worked very quickly up to that. It helped that we had Main Dining in advance AND we were given the coveted PTTAPTA rotation - with formal and semi-formal at Triton’s and Pirate menu at Parrot Cay. People came with doctor’s notes in hand and sob stories on why they had to have early dining. Glad I didn’t have to start crying to get Main Dining.
NOTE: Pirate Night was on Thursday Cabo which is a big change. Probably something wasn’t working on the Wed so they moved it.
Quiet Cove is awesome. After sitting in Mickey’s Pool area for just a half hour, I can’t imagine not having an adult place like Quiet Cove to go to.
Late night dining was completely inadequate in my opinion. I don’t want to order room service but I suspect Disney has got it all figured out as far as what their guests want so who am I to argue.
It was sad seeing a few empty tables on formal night. Sure it is a vacation but this is your time to teach your children about dressing up for dinner. The majority of people do participate. The majority of men and children do wear ties and jackets. I saw no tuxedos. You can still dress casual and go to main dining but you stand out like that rebel in high school who would shun spirit week. In my opinion the length of the photo line was outrageous so we had no interest in waiting that long for a photo we would have to pay for later.
I loved the Captain’s social before our formal dining time with complimentary wine and we took a glass in with us into dinner. This was a highlight for us to be able to do this since we rarely pay for wine with dinner.
We loved dining in dining rooms every night. We loved it so much we cancelled our Palo’s dinner reservation.
I love the movies they play and the theater they play in. The whole 3-D thing seems like an unnecessary gimmick to me but my DS7 loved it so that’s what it’s about. I would be happy to watch the movie the old fashion way.
We liked the tastings. We did Cognac, Martini was great and the newest one is Mojito.
DS7 kept turning on my phone so he could play Crazy Bird so I was afraid that I would get home to a thousand dollar roaming charge despite turning off my roaming because my phone kept asking. “Do you want to roam? Significant charges apply” Yes/ No. Yikes!!!
I love the ability to drop DS7 off at the club/lab and go and do our own thing at the Cove, Spa, etc. You don’t have to feel guilty about doing stuff on your own. In fact, they feel like you are doing it FOR them.
The lab/club was great. It was chaotic at times but the kind of chaos that kids like. Everyone seemed engaged in some kind of activity. If you didn’t feel like any of the many child activities going on you could sit down at one of many computer terminals and play one of their addictive games. They did serve a “light” lunch/dinner almost every day but the time was always different. Probably best to take your kid to dinner before putting them in the club.
Coming up soon….
Why we liked the Pirate Snorkel in PVR.
Toy Story sells out.
Danger at sea, as Cabo is cancelled.

Well hope this helps. Any questions and I will try to answer them.

Here is my reasoning for getting to the port early: I want to be among the first ones on (after platinum and concierge guests). I paid good money for the cruise and I want it to last as long as absolutely possible. (I also want to be as close to the last one off as possible for the same reason).

I am curious as to how the seas were, especially with the Tsunamis and earthquakes.

Sorry that you guys had to miss one of your Cabo days, but glad that everything was safe and sound for you!

Did you have the itinerary with back to back Cabo days? If so, can you let us know when your formal night, pirate night, semi-formal night were? We've gotten different answers on this from Disney.

Looking forward to hearing more about your trip! I think I'll like the mojito tasting :)

I was on same cruise. There were not huge swells 12 hours after the Tsunami. But on 6th and 7th day it was extremely windy and swells reached as high as 8m per the Bridge report.

I could have sworn the difference between the first boarding and us was about 30 minutes at most.

We back to back Cabo days. Formal night is day 3 at Sea, Pirate Night is Day 5 Cabo and Semi-Formal is Day 6 Cabo. I thought the lobsters on the Captain's Menu on Day 6 were amazing but maybe some NE'ers may disagree.

Last day at sea was very rocky with a constant rolling feeling in the Walt Disney Theatre in the very front and AP & PC in the back.

We had Dolphin kids planned on the day of the tsunami. The captain kept coming over the intercom saying he was waiting for the port to open. We decided that it was not worth the risk going on it and went down to cancel. The person at the excursion desk was completely unmoved implying we would need to go if the Mexican government opened the port back up. Fortunately, a few seconds later another crew member said they had someone on the waitlist who wanted the ticket so I was off the hook.

Also they made a special announcement telling people not to send their small children alone for Dolphin Kids. I assume people thought Disney would be taking care of their kids like at the club.

That sounds about right for our last cruise; however those 30 minutes in Parrot Cay that were practically to ourselves were wonderful.

Agree the lobsters were awsome on Captain's menu ...yes we saw the farewell show at WD theatre and it was rocking and rolling along with the music.. :rotfl:

I'm taking my family and am worried about the constant rocking and rolling you experienced during your trip. We are leaving the first week in April. How did your little ones handle this? Was it all day and night? How about tsunami? Did that effect the rest of your trip? Thanks. Hotdog1234

Bill,

What do you mean when you said "Toy story sold out"? Do you need tickets to see this show? If so, I didn't see where I would purchase this ahead of time. Thanks, Hotdog1234

Last day at sea was tough for some of us. Most of the kids handled it well and acted like they didn't even notice the rocking and rolling. Although, I saw a couple of kids toss their cookies outside of the theater. Also once on the Pirate Snorkel. Always little girls for some reason. Most of the days were smooth sailing!!! It doesn't stop at night but we all had no problem sleeping with the rolling. In fact, it made it feel better to lie down. They cannot give out children's seasick medicine. You have to buy it.

No tickets. But there was not one seat remaining for the 8:30pm show. Not one even obstructed view seat. People tried sitting on the stairs but we were told not to sit there so went back to the room and watched it on TV. DS7 starting crying but I am not a person that gets there 30 minutes early. What is so weird is that there were some seats for every other show at 8:30pm even their "award winning" dreams show. So why Toy Story was full of all the shows is beyond me.
This is kind of how Disney works. Give people many options and the most popular will fill-up but they just expect you to do something else.

Good to know. Thanks.

Knowing what you have experienced during your trip, would you do it again "Mexican Riveria"? Any other suggests/thoughts before we embark on Disney adventure? Thanks again for all the feedback. I'm hoping things well go without a hitch for me and my family. .Hotdog1234

Whether I would do it "again" does not really matter. We had a great time and the trip was well worth it. Food was good, shows were good and I did not see one person complain about cancelling the last Cabo day. I missed out on buying gifts in Cabo but other than that I had plenty of sun and fun. The staff was working hard to correct some of the complaints for the first few cruises. Funny how we did not see very much of Mexico on our 7-Day Mexican Riveria cruise but I have no regrets. :rotfl:

Some more suggestions:
1) Dont sign up for tastings unless you can do them. You cannot cancel them if something else important appears on the Navigator. However, they will switch them to another tasting for free.
2) After a few days we discovered Triton's had the same A La Carte menu for breakfast and lunch everyday so on some days try one of the buffets for lunch and breakfast instead. The buffets had crab and even a taco bar on one day.
3) The standard among cruise ships is that kids can eat from the adult menu if they like, however, that does not always apply to lunch served on Mexican excursions when kids pay a big discount in price since they are not run by DCL.
4) Get your final swim on during day six after Cabo. We saw only one brave little tike swimming on day seven (Saturday) since it was cold and windy. Might be different in the Spring.
5) If you have children in the club/lab be sure to block out an hour on Saturday on day seven from 4:15-5:30pm for Freedom Rocks. Just about all the kids particpate on stage at the Walt Disney Theatre as long as you take them to the club/lab at 4:15pm. Older kids 7-10 (i think) were in the lab, 6 and under were in the club (age split is only for this event). They gave out three different colored t-shirts based on age category.
6) Watch for "Boys or Girls Chill" on one night I think Wednesday night. It's late (10pm??) but the kids loved this. All boys go to the club (away from all the computers in the lab) for a game Ninja dodge ball. Even the young kids participated. All the girls went to the lab for girly things. I think nail painting or something like that. Kids did not want to leave until it was over.

On the first Cabo day the ship got into port much earlier than they tell you. Some people are concerned since their POC time is later than their excursion time. We were going to hang out and go later after the crowds but guess what? No crowds! They went over the speaker and said there was no wait for a tender to the pier even close to the beginning of tendering. We quickly went down and hopped right on. If there was any problem in the past there was no problem on our cruise and our cruise was sold out.

I agree, even my Mario Kart addicted 8 year old liked this.

On the 2/20 cruise, we were told that they changed Pirate night to a night where they would encounter less winds so Mickey could go down the zipline. We had Palo reservations that night so missed the dinner but made the show.

Actually let me say this. Knowing what I do now after having been on the trip I would absolutely plan a first cruise to the Mexican Riveria. We were amazed what an incredible value the vacation was with the KSF promotion. It was interesting seeing people walking around arguing with each other about the tip suggestions at the end of the cruise. This was a surprise to some with big families and the feeling was that Disney should pay the staff rather than have the cruisers do it (of course this is a cruise industry thing not a Disney thing). Can't imagine not being prepared in advance for paying several hundred dollars in tips at the end but I can only imagine that some parents didn't sleep well that last night because of it. Here are the tip suggestions including chidren for the 7 Day cruise:
$28 per person in your room for the Server
$21 per person in your room for the Assistant Server
$28 per person in your room for the Room Maid (gives you the towel animal too)
$7 per person in your room for the Head Server (he was worth so much more to us since he made sure we were taken care of every night)
So a family of four is suggested to tip $336 total for the cruise. We felt everyone worked very hard for their tips. They work at least 70 hours per week for many months straight. You might only see them during your 2 hour dinner they also work breakfast, lunch and the other dinner shift in one of the dining rooms. Whenever they happen to see you at their breakfast and lunch assignment they will make themselves available to you because only you (and the few other tables they are assigned to at dinner) will be paying them in the end.

You should post that on the main board. I'm sure there are a lot of people there that don't read trip reports.

As a large family (5 kids) I am definately glad to be "in the know" about the tips! I can see how that would be a pretty big shock on the last night if you had no idea.... But surely these people wondered/thought about tips in general when planning the cruise:confused3

I don't know...I find that people in general are pretty clueless. Look at that person who, last week, received her docs in the mail for her April cruise and discovered they weren't going to Mazatlan that way! I can't imagine booking a cruise and then just sitting back and doing nothing in the way of research about it.

There are plenty of people (more than we can imagine I'm sure) who don't have or use the internet, book their cruise through a local travel agent, and remain in the dark about many things.
