mexican heather

Has anyone ever used mexican heather as an annual? I planted two in my front yard about 6 weeks ago. Someone had mistakingly left the pots in the perennial section of my favorite garden center. Not knowing any better, I planted them thinking that they were perennials. I'm told that in this area, they are typically houseplants only. They seem to be doing great outside so far, but the garden center guy thinks that I should pot them and bring them in. He doesn't seem to think that they will survive the season. Anyone else have any luck using mexican heather outdoors?

Hi Ryanpatricksmom!

Here's a link with information for you on Mexican Heather. In the Hardiness section they say that it is a "tender tropical shrub that will be killed to the ground by freezing temperatures."

I don't see any reason why they won't survive the summer outdoors. We shouldn't have to worry about freezing temperatures! In September, I'll try potting them to see how they do as a houseplant.

I remembered your post and just had to have them.......

From what I saw at my garden center....they are "tender perennials" which will winter over in the deep south. Up here...treat them as annuals!

I just loved the sweet flowers....so little and beautiful.

I would have never noticed mexican heather if you hadn't posted a thread about it!

I have mexican heather. It's beautiful. I planted several six packs last year and didn't think it would come up again, but it did, and it's prettier than it was last year.

I'll try to take a photo of it a little later today and post it for you.
