Metal Detectors

That it is glass, it can be dropped and broke. What is really stupid is that they sell a million glass mugs inside the parks... but they don't like you carrying them in.

I need an emoticon for laughing and shaking my head....

I felt the same way. I would understand if they require you to send glass purchases to the front of the park to be picked up, or even warn you to keep them in the bag until you leave the park, but there are no warnings. It never even crossed my mind it would be a problem to bring one in...

We are exclusively no bag people when going to the parks.
At Epcot they always send you through the metal detector. The only time they'll let folks skip is if there is a line.
At MK most of the time they send you through the metal detector. There is never a line that I've seen.
At HS and AK only occasionally do you get sent through. Most of the time we have not.

My observation is they purposely keep the lines down for them by not pulling too many guests, or in the case of Epcot, letting guests skip if they do get backed up.

This past trip (last week) it seems some of them have been set to increased sensitivity. It was the first trip where my underwire bra set them off, and it's the same bra I've worn since they were installed.

Also, I learned 2 trips back, I take off my Smart Watch. It will set it off just like a phone does.

They were contractors but are now Disney employees.

Ok, this has me thinking about my fitbit zip, the clip on kind that I wear everyday and most of the time it's clipped to (TMI) my bra in the "valley" area. :teeth: So, I guess this will have to come off to go through the metal detector. So I better clip this on my waist at Disney, or the metal detector line could get interesting :rolleyes1

They did not have the metal detectors yet last year when we went. Stupid question, but do you have to take off your celebration buttons?

Everyone should be going through the metal detectors most of the time at this point. Straight from a CM, it's their goal right now to have about 80% of guests (4 out of 5) going through the metal detectors. Said CM didn't know if the ultimate goal was 100%, but suspected that it eventually will be.

I think this is the case for non bag guests but I do not believe they are even close to this number for guests who go through bag check.

I haven't worn one yet so not sure but I would. I took off my pin lanyard. Actually, by the end of our trip we just loaded DGD down with all our metal ;)

They only thing that happens if you get a beep is they wand you. If the wand goes off around the bra area they'll ask "do you have a wire bra on". When you say yes they say ok. There is no pat down or proof otherwise asked for. My goal was go go through without setting the thing off, which is why I opted to take off my watch vs. wear it. I only had my bra set it off a couple times so there must have been something different about those particular machines.

What are they doing with people who have a pacemaker/defibrillator? Do they just pat down? Wand them(that makes me nervous that they would get the wand too close)?

If that's the goal then they need a better strategy for strollers. I watched as they requires someone to leave their very small baby just on the side where they couldn't see it (due to the way the tent and detectors were set up at the time) and there was a line. Honestly I would not be away from my little baby that long. At least at universal the stroller got pushed through then the adult.

They wand, to my knowledge, no pat downs. At least I've never seen one. No idea what they do for pacemakers. But I'm sure they have a policy so just let them know

I said when this first started and we first went through one that I felt the way they handled it was poorly organized.
Not only do they separate adults from kids, ok for groups but not for single parents but they also do not closely monitor the bins of belongings. When it's moving fast they get very confused on which bin goes to which person. They rely on honesty from the guests.

We are lucky in that DGD is 8 so she's fine standing off by the side waiting on us. I give her our bigger things like pin lanyard and waterbottle/fan thingy and she waits. But if she was younger we'd have to let me go, DH stay with her and them he go and I stay with her.

We're here now and my DH takes the bags to be checked I take the kids and go in through the no bag area. At Epcot we had to go through the dectors we didn't HS or MK, we are headed to AK tomorrow. He hasn't had to go through them either. The security guard did see the bulge under my shirt of my phone and question if it was a phone, I lifted my shirt so he could see and he smiled and said have a great day. I was expecting to go through the dectors a lot more then we have this week.

I got slightly annoyed at one guard last week. DH had a Wilderness Explorer book in his cargo short pocket. It was sticking out the top and clear what it was, and nothing else was in the pocket. The guard stopped him and demanded to see what it was, and examined it. Found it rather ridiculous. While it wasn't a huge deal and didn't delay us it was just strange. I can't imagine what he thought it was, other than a booklet.

That is strange. I totally get why the guard questioned me, I had a huge bulge under my shirt. You couldn't tell what it was, better to be safe than sorry. In your case I'd have been annoyed, it's one thing to question what it's that but to demand it and then examine it, where was the need for that? Some people..... Ugh Hope the rest of your trip was smooth!

No, in our experience, monthly trips since the detectors were installed, they have always sent all guests entering the no bag line at Epcot through the metal detector. The only time we have not gone through it was if there was a significant back up. This is at both the main entrance and the IG. At the IG, everyone goes through, even those guests that went through bag check.

Not going through the metal detector is the exception, vs. the rule, at Epcot. So I would prepare to go through it at Epcot and be lucky if you don't.
We must have just been on off days, then. No big back up, but we weren't sent through the detectors. Thanks!

To be fair, I did say that the CM I talked to "suspected" that the goal would eventually be 100%. I did not say that the CM knew it to be so. This CM also told me that it would always be more difficult to accomplish even the 80% at MK because of the layout of the entrance. There's a lot more room to add metal detectors at the other three parks than there is at MK.
