Metal Detectors in Parks?

Just curious- Why do you ask this question? What are you planning to bring in?

Maybe it is my disaster and security training, but I thought the EXACT same thing when I saw this post. Kinda made me uncomfortable to see this asked and answered. :guilty:

No offense to the OP, probably has a legit reason to ask.

If the OP (or anyone for that matter) had some nefarious and evil plan to sneak something into WDW they would only have to go to a park once to see what passes for "security" at WDW. There was no harm in answering the question.

Many people who have screws or plates in their body due to some injury have trouble with metal detectors.
Other have jewelry that they do not want to or cannot remove for sentimental reasons, because it wasn't designed to be removed or it is located in/on a part of the body they don't care to expose in public or have searched by strangers.

What the OP asked and the info people have provided for her, IMHO, were not wrong. I think she's just curious. Metal detectors may be a part of everyday life in our more security-conscious lifestyle these days, but they do add time to airport boardings, courthouse entrances, etc. I see nothing wrong with asking about this to make sure she can plan her days efficiently. I guarantee if there were metal detectors at the entrances it would take twice as long to get through security as it does now with the hand checks of bags.

Also keep in mind that what the OP and others have talked about here is quite probably not the entire security policy Disney employs. The fact is that we have no idea what other measures they are employing on a macro scale away from guest view, and Disney certainly is not going to make that public. In my line of work, I've seen some pretty impressive security equipment demonstrated that is a)small b) unobtrusive to customers/guests c) can be effectively hidden and d) can detect a far greater range of threats than just metal objects. I have no inside info on what Disney has or doesn't have, but I do have some insight as to some of the equipment that is available to companies like Disney. I'm pretty comfortable when I enter Disney property, as I'm pretty confident there's far more to their security than meets the eye with their bag checks at the entrances.

Maybe she has a steel rod in her body somewhere and she can't take it out. I have a uncle that has a steel plate in his head from a hand grenade in veitnam.

Thank you, I am just curious and asked the question as I couldn't remember. The last time we went was 2002 so I didn't know. Since then, my husband has been to Iraq twice (he is in the Army) and while in Iraq the 2nd time, he was injured and has a metal plate in his neck. That's why.

I ask because I am curious and wanted to know.

I am planning on bringing my DH who has a metal plate in his neck and my 5 children. I don't appreciate you questioning me like I am a terrorist or something. :furious:

Thank your husband for me for his service and thank you to you and your family for your sacrifice. :grouphug:

I think these times make us all just a little crazy! I'm sure your DH would understand that diligence and curiosity are to be expected now. I'll bet after his return from the big litter box he saw a lot of things from a whole different perspective than before he went. I know my Marine nephew did.

Just wondering, wouldn't you prefer that people ask questions....What if a simple question could prevent a massive terrorist attack? Please don't get angry when a question makes some people a little uneasy....better safe than sorry :thumbsup2

I know, I am sorry, I didn't mean to sound mean, but I have not been here long and it seems like people are so quick to flame people just for being curious and asking questions, not just here but on the dining board as well. I just over-reacted. :guilty:

When I told DH there were no metal detectors, he was surprised.

Thank you, thankfully he is fine and I hope he doesn't ever have to go back. He miss the birth of DD and almost DS.

Thanks! :cheer2:

I am very sorry about your husband's injury. :sad2:

Pixie dust to you and your family for your visit! :wizard:

You know, it's interesting to note that although Disney searches bags, they do not screen people. I have a son who is a police officer and a son-in-law who is an FBI agent and both carry a gun at all times. You would never know it by looking at them. They carry summer and winter, concealed. Who says the bad guys can't do the same! Not that I'm paranoid or anything!

Another thought, more to reassure the OP, than anything. Most of the plates are titanium. May Dad has one in his leg and my son one in his arm. Neither set off the metal detectors at the airports. My Dad is such a character though, that I think he would enjoy it if his plate did! So...even if DIsney did have metal detectors they probably would not alarm at your husband's plate. Heck! If they did and it did, given your husband's history they might give you the red carpet treatment, which he deserves!
