Met Gala Dresses

You know some questionable fashion choices were made when Jaden and Willow Smith wind up looking pedestrian and average by comparison!

Some of the gowns were gorgeous!

What I want to know is how Lady Gaga walks in those shoes??

oh my, why Madonna? She looks fabulous for her age, and I think she would be stunning in something that wasn't so trashy.

She made a name for herself with trashy shock value, it's her go to look. She's rarely deviated from costumey looks all these years if you think about it.

I know, but you reach a certain age and it just seems pathetic to keep acting and dressing like you did when you were young and could get away with being edgy and shocking.
If she's still looking to shock and be in the spotlight she could do that by actually dressing in a way nobody would expect from her.

That's Madonna for you. I hate to say it, because I was saddened by the rift she had with her son, but even he looks better now that he's changed his look.

Here's my take on a few.

- Zoe Saldana's big thumbs up
- Jennifer Hudson looks beautiful
- The stuff around Bette Midler's face/neck would drive me nuts. But love those lashes
- Lady Gaga kind of tame for her
- Tabitha Simmons looks like Tudors met Game of Thrones
- Emma Watson always looks classy and stunning
- Beyonce's looks plastic. Not sure the color is that flattering either
- Agreed Claire Danes looks like Cinderella
- Lupita Nyong'o. I want to see the rest of the dress. Has mermaid feel which could be cool.
- Madonna - just no. And her make up looks harsh
- Demi Lovato looks like she rolled around on Versace's rug
- Zayn Malik what's with the Iron man sleeves?
- Kim Kardashian West and Kanye West - what you come to expect

She's definitely trying to capture the spotlight. IMO she is kind of pathetic and afraid if she strays from the shocking looks she will look her age. You would think somebody would tell her, but I'm guessing there's nobody left in her life who can remain if they speak their mind to her.

I didn't mind Demi Lovato's dress actually.

I thought the Iron Man sleeve things were from a video game or a movie that guy was from or something like that.

They don't stand the whole night, just most of it. There is a dinner component, and usually someone sings a couple of songs afterward, but mostly it is a cocktail party, socializing on your feet. No sititng in theatre seats, so you can sweep the train of the dress to the side of your chair at dinner.

Lupita Nyongo's dress was lovely (if you scroll down the page on that linked site, you can see the rest of it. Just a plain sweep of silk chiffon chemise with hand-sewn rectangle paillettes on it. Nyongo is very astute about what flatters her figure; she is built like a model 1920's flapper, simple lines work best for her.)

The feather gown Saldana wore was a masterpiece of the couturier's art, which is what this event is really about. (There are several close-up photos of it on the Daily Mail site: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbi...a-gown-feathers-elongated-train-Met-Gala.html.) That one would be nearly impossible to sit in in a conventional chair; the designer probably arranged for her to have a stool-type chair at dinner, so that the skirt could be dropped over it (or she removed the skirt entirely, which is a good possibility; in the closeup photos the skirt looks like it might not be attached to the bodice, it had a satin sash tied at the back.) FWIW, that gown was a brilliant move on the part of D&G; they are currently being boycotted by a lot of celebrities, and I'm sure they meant to use it as a statement piece to remind those folks why it pays to wear D&G.

The true "spotlight" went to Claire Danes, actually. The theme of the night was Manus x Machina, and as usual, many of the designers tried to go with the theme of futurism and robotics. Danes' dress was the embodiment of the theme, though you couldn't tell in the red carpet photos, because it was still daylight out. The dress was LIGHTED. Look at the inside-the-gallery photo from CNN to see the effect: http://www.cnn.com/2016/05/02/fashion/met-gala-2016/index.html

Gaga seems to have forgotten her skirt entirely.

FWIW, I am dying to see that exhibit. I haven't been to NYC in ages, but I do believe that I'm going to manage a trip this summer. This show is a dream come true for people who love to sew. If you are interested, here is the Met's promo film for it: http://www.metmuseum.org/exhibitions/listings/2016/manus-x-machina

Wow! Thank you for that link, Claires dress is amazing lit up!
And LOL, that was my thought of Gaga as well.

I go to the Costume Exhibit at the Met every year. This is one of the years I am most looking forward to - I thought the China exhibit was good last year, Savage Beauty was great - I loved the homage to the supermodel a few years back - and the british invasion was fantastic as well. Charles James was good - but I didn't love Punk.

LOVED Claire Danes at the gala. I actually thought Kylie Jenner looked great as well.

Thanks for the links. I loved Zoe Saldana and Claire Danes.

Wow Madonna has had a lot of work done on her face. Wasn't even sure that was her looks trashy as usual.

OK, until I knew there was a theme, I was wondering why there were so many fugly dresses.

Gaga is just nasty - her crotch is wrinkled in one picture. Really? With no skirt, you don't pay extra attention to the lining/boning in the crotch?

Madonna looks old and ugly, and stupid. Not shocking. Just tired and old and dreary.

Emma Watson - always classy with a bit of funk and edge.

The Whoville hairdo on Lupita Nyongo was not a good fit for her gorgeous dress.

The peacock train - I'd just want to stand on it and see what happened ;)
