A few weeks ago, Lesley posted about never eating sugar again. I was really surprised at the way her body reacted to the ice cream cake she ate. It got me to thinking that I used waaaaay too much sugar in my coffee/tea.

So I cut back on the amount of sugar I added to coffee and tea by half. Then a week or so later I cut back by half again. Last week I was using a very flat teenie spoon of sugar in my coffee and tea.

Today I am drinking AND more importantly ENJOYING sugar-free coffee. :) I probably could have gone cold turkey, but I wanted to ween myself off instead. Every so often I will take a sip of DH's coffee (he uses lots of sugar) and it's too sicky sweet for me.

I NEVER thought I would enjoy a cup of coffee or tea that wasn't sweetened to the max. I try to avoid artificial sweeteners, so that wasn't an option for me.

Lesley, thanks for your post. If you hadn't shared your experience with us I might still be adding too much sugar to my diet. When I read you post, something clicked and I realized I was using 100s of calories a day just in sugar!!!!! Thanks so much!!!!

I noticed when I first cut back that I was craving things like donuts and toast with strawberry jam and other really sweet things. Yesterday we went to a brunch and I had a bite (ok, more than a bite!) of some desserts and they were all WICKED sweet tasting. It's amazing how being a sugar addict dulls your sense of sweet tasting things. Now that I am not so hopped up on sugar, anything sweet tastes almost too sweet! :)

What a sweet post. ha ha! ;)

 ;)
Awesome! I'd like to go caffine free, too. I agree about the too sweet thing. I'm not enjoying sugar as much, but I did partake of the most wonderful Brownies I've EVER had my whole life. The recipe came from COOKING LIGHT, so it was a guilt free indulgence.

Keep the Faith!

Wow, that is awesome, I am impressed. I know that is something I couldn't do, especially since I do not like coffee. Great job, Karen!

When I was a young woman I drank milk and sugar in my coffee. Then I got pregnant and the sweetened and lightened coffee just didn't taste good. I started drinking my coffee without milk and/or sugar. I still drink it that way.

My husband sweetens his coffee and if I accidentally pick up his cup and drink from it, the sweetness almost gags me. Same thing with iced tea. Heaven help me if I accidentally get a glass of sweetened tea, yuck.

Good for you, finding a way to cut down on calories Tig!

Good for you on cutting back on sugar!

In the year 1900, the average American consumed about five pounds of sugar annually. According to the U.S.D.A Economic Research Service, in 1992 the average American consumed one hundred and forty two pounds. I shuder to think what the figure might be now!

Consuming sugar stimulates the production of insulin, which starts the fat storing process. Refined sugar has all of its nutrients removed. It is pure energy whose excess is available for storage - i.e, fat!

Aren't you glad you're weaning yourself off added sugar???

I repeat! Good for you! :D :D :D

Hey, Tracy! If that brownie recipe showed up around here I would certainly be willing to try it! ;) I know what you mean about caffiene! I gave it up for about 8 months and then slipped and started drinking it again. All my coffee is decaf, but the tea is from England and has caffiene, d'oh!

Debbi     "don't like coffee"? I don't understand those three words together. ;)

So, Kath, that was one of the many benefits of being pregnant then, eh? ;) That is really strange. I'd have thought your sweet tooth would have kicked in big time, but I've never been pregnant so I have no idea about such things! Sweetened iced tea - ick! That is the one drink I never had problem drinking sugar free. Of course, it took this Yankee a while to get used to the thought of iced tea!

Carol, those are some freaky stats!!! At first I thought you mistyped 1900, but then I read everything and thought, "YIKES!" It is amazing the foods and drinks that sugar sneaks into. 142 pounds of sugar a year? I am surprised, but I guess not really. We were buying a 5 pound bag of sugar quite often and I know it was all going into my coffee!!! Now I'll only buy it for baking (DH only has coffee on the weekends). :)

"don't like coffee"? I don't understand those three words together.
LOL! Sorry DH, but I think I found my TRUE soulmate! Still LOL!

I love coffee, but have come to rely on vanilla tea more since I just can't drink coffee without cream and sweetener....
