for a while before we had the do not call registery, I used to have on my machine:

"Thank you for calling, if this is a telemarketer, please leave your full name, business number, and home phone and time zone. I will be calling you back after I get on the evening shift, probably about 1 or 2 am. "

not many left the number (that was back before they left pre-recorded messages)

My guess is that someone is going through a rough patch, but we have no way of knowing what prompted the message. I wish I were empowered enough to pull something like that off (I don't need to, but if I did...)

The IT guy at my old place had this on his:

"Hello".

That's it.

He was on call 24/7, and I can't tell you how many people thought HE had answered phone, not an answering machine.

"I'm not home right now, or I saw your number on caller ID and don't want to talk to you."
