I was telling someone at work how much fun I was having posting and reading messages on the Dis boards. She appeared shocked and said that the common feeling by most people is that anyone who posts messages on these boards are:

Friendless
Lonely
Isolated
Nerdy
Lacking in social skills
Odd
Weird
Crazy

Anyway, I asked around the office about what people thought about those who posted on Internet message boards, and the general impression was we were all a bunch of socially isolated losers.

Can this be true?

Only my psychiatrist knows for sure.

I for one, am not. And that's a fact.

I haven't left the house in 8 years 5 days 23 minutes 21 seconds.

My response was that honestly there may be some truth to the stereotype and I may be guilty.

I went down your list:

Am I...

Friendless? No

Lonely? No - I love being alone, I never consider it loneliness

Isolated - A bit. I don't work so I am isolated, but not in a bad way

Nerdy - Yes, I think I am a bit nerdy, but I enjoy it

Lacking social skills - Absolutely not - I can socialize and schmooze with the best of them, I just generally choose not to

Odd - Yes some. I do tend to be into some odd things, but I certainly wouldn't consider them SO odd as to be bizarre.

Weird - Sometimes - but again, in a good way, not bizarre

Crazy - Not at all. I'm one of the more rational people I know. ;)

So you can tell your work friends that even if we're a little weird, we certainly aren't freaks of nature. We have homes, families, jobs, lives, the whole shot - and yes, we enjoy message boards.

I think its just the opposite. We are overly-social and out-going people, who seek out amusing interaction with other overly-social people. Plus its just a great way to kill time at work.

Friendless - yes im friendly :p
Lonely - no way
Isolated - nope
Nerdy - pure nerd here
Lacking in social skills - nope
Odd -yep
Weird - yep
Crazy - sometimes

Some might agree that I am kinda wierd sometimes......but definitely in a fun socially acceptable way. I don't know why people get so snotty about message boards. Seems to me that most everyone who posts here lead normal lives (socially and otherwise) but that they occasionally enjoy talking to people with similar interests. Perhaps the message board snotties are the isolated ones?

I think she was trying to tell you something.

It's just a good way to avoid work. I, for one, am proud of my lack of a social life!

Im not sad or lonely or a nerd... Im bored, at work.

I email friends, Im friends - and in between those - I read these boards. I have a true LOVE of Disney - thats what got me here.

I have to agree w/ this! :sunny:

YUP -
that describes me to a T
I am sure a few of my friends here can attest to that!

I think these boards are a lot like life - some people come here for MORE social interaction in their busy, fulfilled lives, for some, it's the only link they have to the outside world.

I've always found that the ones that protest too much are the ones most insecure with themselves.

I'm another who is just bored at work.
However, I was very shocked at a thread (from yesterday I believe) in which about half of the people wrote that they don't have friends in real life, and they only spend time with/talk to their husbands, children, or family members. That is pretty sad, IMO. So, I guess it does happen. I hope it's the exception and not the rule.

Also, I wanted to add, it's one thing to think those things about people and another to actually come on here and ask the question. If someone's feeling sad or depressed about their lack of social interaction, don't you think questions like this may make them feel worse?
