Merryl Streep goes on anti Walt Disney Rant

Disney produces "Saving Mr. Banks" and Emma Thompson's star gets brighter. But at a pre Golden Globes event where Emma is honored, Merryl Streep uses the forum and the film connection as an excuse to attack Walt Disney:

http://variety.com/2014/biz/awards/meryl-streep-blasts-walt-disney-at-national-board-of-review-dinner-1201035989/

Of course I don't know Walt Disney and nobody on this board did either so we don't know what he was really like, but I just read the 2 Walt Disney Vault books and the book seems to dismiss the two big things that Streep addresses.

If she doesn't scare you, no evil thing will.

Seems she is more upset at not getting the part.

The anti Semite thing has long been disproved.

In 1938, yes the industry was all men......all the industry, not just Disney.

Things have happily changed since then.

Now it's getting even better, for people who know Disney history much better than Streep are calling her out for being wrong on most or all of what she said:

http://talkbacker.com/movies/meryl-streep-calls-walt-disney-an-anti-semite-gender-bigot-on-stage-while-presenting-award-to-emma-thompson/id=19674

One Notable example from the piece, regarding the "sexist" letter Streep cited.

First, what Variety cited Streep as saying:

She read a letter that his company wrote in 1938 to an aspiring female animator. It included the line, “Women do not do any of the creative work in connection with preparing the cartoons for the screen, as that task is performed entirely by young men.”

Then what the Talkbacker article says Streep conveniently omitted:

Here’s the rub. The letter Streep quoted from wasn’t written by Walt Disney, it’s signed, “Mary”. The animation industry in the 30′s was as gender-biased as any other, and yet, Walt demanded that Rhetta Scott, an expert on animal drawing, be given an assignment and “trained up” to work on Bambi because he so admired her work (“But she’s a woman!” one fellow exclaimed, “I don’t care, I want her work on the screen.” he responded), Walt named Mary Blair as art director on several of his classic films and his theme park attractions, on and on it goes. But let’s hear from Walt himself, in a letter from 1941:

“If a woman can do the work as well, she is worth as much as a man. The girl artists have the right to expect the same chances for advancement as men, and I honestly believe they may eventually contribute something to this business that men never would or could

Agreed :thumbsup2

Funny how we like to judge people by today's standards. But you just can't. Women had only had the vote for 20 years at that time, and most didn't work especially after they married, until WWII when it became necessary for women to start doing what had traditionally been men's jobs.

And many men of that generation never accepted the changing role of women. Walt Disney was at least ahead of his generation, if not leading them into the modern age. I can see this story getting much bigger than it deserves to be, since the public love it when a celeb screws up.

~^^^That's Glenn Close. I don't know if Meryl Streep has ever worked for Disney except for upcoming film 'Into the Woods' with Johnny Depp.

~^^^This is Meryl, she is so boss, lol. I always said, she seemed way to comfortable in her magnificent portrayal of 'Miranda Priestly." LOL. :rotfl:

~Anyway, I just love Meryl Streep. I don't know what happened here. Hopefully, she will just quiet down because not only were her actions in poor taste, it was quite selfish of Meryl to grandstand during her "friend's" big moment. :(

My reaction to this: Walt Disney may have been sexist and racist back in the 60s?? Say it isn't so! While there may be evidence that he may not have been, I'd also like to think that if he lived longer, he too would have evolved just as most of our society has.

:rotfl: Thanks, I've never been able to tell them apart.

There are also plenty of people who are convinced that Procter & Gamble's classic moon-and-stars logo was evidence that the company supported and practiced satanism. Finally, Procter & Gamble threw in the towel and switched to an ugly "P&G" logo. Maybe the ridiculous rumor will slowly fade away -- or maybe it never will.

The discredited rumor about Walt Disney being an anti-Semite and racist has also been around for many decades.

Some have suggested that the rumor goes back to stories planted during the 1941 Disney cartoonists strike. Others have suggested that the rumor started because Midwestern "farm boy" Walt Disney appeared to be an exception in the movie industry, whose successful pioneers were often East Coasters of Eastern European Jewish origin.

You would think that in this information age, people could easily find out the truth. But the Internet also perpetuates falsehoods.

Walt Disney was not a saint, but he was arguably quite progressive for his time in recognizing talented people and giving them opportunities, regardless of who they were.

It will be interesting to see if Meryl Streep changes her opinion based on what real Disney historians have documented about Walt Disney -- or if she is someone who takes the position, "I've made up my mind. Don't bother me with facts."

I don't know Meryl, nor will I claim to, but I bet she won't do the research to find out the truth. She does seem just bitter and I don't think she cares how people will react to it, nor does she care to fix it.

Someone on Yahoo had a good point: Wait till she finds out that women weren't highly viewed by our founding fathers. Not verbatim but along the lines of that

Let's see..
Using her "fame" to spout off.
Not bothering to checks facts.
Defaming someone who's been dead for decades and can't defend themselves. Using todays standards to judge someone from another decade (century).
Is she running for office?

Streep is jeolous of her friend's good luck, and I hate to be her enemy or her director. Walt Disney thought women are not creative yet he hired them as his landscape artists, colorists and most of us princesses were female. This sounds weird since most women create life. He wouldn't have told Traverse that she inspired his imagination with her books. She was the one who didn't cartoons. If she was against new Disney, she should say so. Really starting to wonder about that new Disney movie, she will be in.

I've always admired Meryl Streep but I found her tirade extremely disappointing. For all the reasons previously mentioned. Why take potshots against a man who's been dead almost fifty years? He can't defend himself and most evidence points to the contrary anyway. Like I said, disappointing.

Why would someone find it necessary to disparage a man that has been dead for over 40 years? It serves no purpose but to keep her name in the news and on our lips for a few days. Oops, maybe she feels her new film needs a little extra boost....just sayin'.

For a man who's life, movies and ideas have brought joy to millions, he's tops in my book. To Meryl I say, no award for this one! Shame on you!

Abigail Disney also slammed "Saving Mr. Banks" on Facebook for being "a brazen attempt by the company to make a saint out of the man."

Abigail Disney, the filmmaker/social activist grandniece of Walt Disney, has weighed in on Meryl Streep's scathing criticism of the animation legend, revealing that she has "mixed feelings" but ultimately "loved" the actress' remarks.

On Jan. 7, Streep set off controversy during her National Board of Review presentation when she dubbed Walt a "bigot," and called him a racist, sexist and supporter of anti-Semitism -- points which have been disputed, to one degree or another, by some historians and people who knew the man.

On Friday, Abigail posted two Facebook statuses that left no doubt about her own views regarding her great-uncle, Streep and Walt Disney Pictures, the distributor of Saving Mr. Banks, in which Tom Hanks plays Walt Disney.

On Friday, Abigail posted two Facebook statuses that left no doubt about her own views regarding her great-uncle, Streep and Walt Disney Pictures, the distributor of Saving Mr. Banks, in which Tom Hanks plays Walt Disney.

That morning, Abigail, whose grandfather Roy O. Disney was Walt's older brother and co-founder of The Walt Disney Company, posted: "I hadn't heard a word about this Meryl Streep/Walt Disney flap till this morning. Funny how no one mentioned it to me.... Like I was living in some kind of information bubble and nobody wanted to hurt my feelings or something. But if anyone is going to have mixed feelings about a cultural icon, wouldn't it be a member of the family??? More than anyone else???

"And if you are going to have mixed feelings about a family member (and we all do) take it from me, you really need to be as honest as possible about those feelings, or else you are going to lead yourself into many a blind alley in life!! ... Anti-Semite? Check. Misogynist? OF COURSE!! Racist? C'mon he made a film (Jungle Book) about how you should stay 'with your own kind' at the height of the fight over segregation! As if the 'King of the Jungle' number wasn't proof enough!! How much more information do you need? But damn, he was hella good at making films and his work has made billions of people happy. There's no denying it. So there ya go. Mixed feelings up the wazoo."

Abigail posted again 10 hours later: "I feel I have to clarify. I LOVED what Meryl Streep said. I know he was a man of his times and I can forgive him, but Saving Mr Banks was a brazen attempt by the company to make a saint out of the man. A devil he was not. Nor an angel. That's the point and if you read ALL her remarks you'll know that's exactly what she was getting at. She said exactly what I said about how in spite of it all, his vision was amazing and he brought joy to so many around the world. So I say Brava Meryl. I don't believe in bashing for bashing's sake but whenever we see a misplaced attempt at hagiography we need to speak our minds!"

The Walt Disney Company declined to comment on the Facebook posts. This is not the first time that Abigail has spoken out to criticize Walt or the studio he founded.

On Dec. 12, 2013, she posted to Facebook a note that included her thoughts on Banks and Disney in general: "What my family's business has done is to dumb down and middle-ify and oversimplify (ok, ok DISNEYFY) so much, and while that has rightly and admirably brought a lot of pleasure--joy even-- to a lot of people who needed it given that life can be hard and pleasure hard to come by, it has also encouraged that most grim and American tendency to gloss over the untidy complexities of life, sometimes at great cost to the lived experiences of many others."

Back in 2012, Abigail attempted to renounce her share of the profits from the Disneys' investment in the Ahava cosmetics company, which is based in a West Bank settlement, stating, "I cannot in good conscience profit from what is technically the 'plunder' or 'pillage' of occupied natural resources." When she found that she was legally unable to do so, she donated the investments and profits "to organizations working to end this illegal exploitation."
