Does anyone know why Meredith Viera leaves the Today show at 9 every day? I just noticed this and can't find the reason for it. Thanx

It's in the contracts that she and Matt both only work the first 2 hours. I'm not sure why, but technically the 3rd hour is Ann, Al and Natalie.

It's possible that that third hour (and beyond) is spent writing or producing things that they will show at a later date. they have lots of voice over work, scripts to write and edit, editing to supervise and stuff to shoot for packages they are working on.

Then again it's also possible they have a sweet deal hammered out! In at 5am and out at 9am!

I read someplace that was the reason. They are going to start a 4th hour of the Today show and she can't be involved in anyway because of her Millionaire contract.

I just read this in, I believe, Entertainment Weekly. She cannot be on the show after 9:00 a.m. because after that time Millionaire is on the air somewhere. It was written into her contract that way so there's no conflict.

She really did get the better end of that trade. Katie Couric isn't having anywhere near as much fun!

I would love to know how much vacation both she and Matt get, it seems like one of them is always off.

It is because of her Millionaire contract. I read about this in an article about adding the 4th hour. She can't be on tv after 9:00.
