Day 5 - Sunday - September 21, 2003

Sunday morning dawned like much of the rest of the trip - bright and sunny with temperatures forecasted in the mid to high 80's. I just don't get how these Floridians deal with this. Oh look, another bright, warm, sunny day amongst the palm trees. I don't think I'd ever go to work.

We caught the boat to CityWalk (Yahoo! It's a celebration, Yahoo!) and trotted over to the Studios and Les Boulangerie for our daily pastry fix. The place was busy but not as mobbed as it was on Friday.

After breakfast, we went over to the 11:30 Terminator 2 show. Mary and I had seen this before but we still found it to be entertaining. Laura thought it was "cool". I did notice once again that the 3D did not seem to reach out as much as I would have liked. I think that this has something to do with putting the 3D glasses over my own glasses.

Next, was the 12:30 Horror and Make-up Show. With our FOTL cards, we were let into the theater first and had the chance to sit in the front row. But Mary had read something warning that this was a bad idea because they choose "volunteers" from the front row. Well, she was right, and wrong. The front row is more "interactive" than the rest of the theater. But when it came time to choose a volunteer, they plucked her from the 4th row.

I was a little disappointed in the Horror Show and found the queuing area with The Mummy special effects props to be more interesting than the actual show.

After the Horror Show, it was time to debut Shrek. The preshow was interesting and set up the 3D film nicely. But the promise of entering a torture chamber never really played out unless you consider that to be an inside joke referring to the action created by the 4D. I won't spoil this for newbies but parts of the fourth dimension just didn't jibe with the other three D's.

Since Mary had mentioned Finnegan's as a lunch choice more than once, we took the hint and scooted over there. The interior of Finnegan's is a little odd - Look, it's an Irish Pub, no, it's a movie set, hey our waitress is Hawaiian, wait they're playing U2. Ok, it must be an Irish Pub then.

2 Blarney Smoke Stacks (turkey sandwiches) + 1 fish & chips + soft drinks = $50 with tax and tip. It's a wrap, Aloha, May the road rise up to meet you.

We wandered out of the restaurant just as the Blues Brothers were finishing up (What is it with the song "Brown Eyed Girl"? Did Universal add Van Morrison to their record label?) and explored the alleys in New York. There's something about these gritty but totally unreal alleys that is really appealing.

We sat on a curb and consulted the park guide before deciding to catch the 3:30 Animal Planet show. (On the way over, we stopped at Men in Black just because.) I think a more appropriate name for this show would be "Domestic Animal Planet Semi-Live". What's with all the cats, dogs, and taped footage?

We headed back across the park and used our FOTL cards for Jimmy Neutron. I had the eerie feeling throughout the ride that Yogi Bear was just around the corner. But alas, no funtastic pic-a-nic basket sightings. The generation gap rears its ugly head.

On the way out of the park, we stopped in at the Monster Cafe to get drinks and gawk at the ghoulish decor. At 5:00 with the park closing at 5:30, we had the place to ourselves.

We took the boat back to RPR and Laura went down to the pool while Mary and I opted for naps. Around 6:30, I was looking out the window trying to spot Laura's red swimsuit amongst the swimmers. That's strange, I thought to myself, the pool looks empty. People were gathering up their belongings and leaving. Laura arrived back in the room a few minutes later.

Yeah, you guessed it. Some kid had an "accident" and they closed the pool. Laura said she was peacefully resting on a lounge chair when one of the pool attendants started blowing a whistle and directed everyone to gather up their things and leave. I had read about this happening on another trip report and was hoping it wouldn't happen to us. But that was not to be.

Two words for parents of young swimmers - plastic underwear. Come on!

Laura changed out of her swimsuit (Funny, this was the last time any one of us was in the pool.) and we went down to Jake's for dinner. On the way down, we met JJ. Laura identified him as the wielder of the net that was used to remove the offending substance from the water (The Pool Pooper Scooper). We chatted with him and he informed us that it takes 6 hours to properly clean the pool.

At 7:30, Jake's was pretty empty. Our waitress "Stilts" was friendly and nice. She explained the Jake's back story and cleared up the earlier "Pistian"/"Piston" confusion. 2 burgers + 1 turkey sandwich + drinks = $75 with tax and tip. During the course of dinner, Jake's got considerably busier.

We headed back up to the room and watched half of the Dolphins vs Bills game before falling asleep.
