Hey all, I've been reading the posts over the last few weeks, and although I see a lot of feedback regarding QSFB, custodial and character roles, I never see much about merchandise. Is it less common? Can anyone share any of their experiences- like specifically: where can one expect to work? Is it always in a park or Downtown Disney, perhaps? I would appreciate anything that anyone has to offer, or opinions about it, whether they are personal experiences or roommates experiences. Thanks!

I worked Merch last year at World of Disney in Downtown Disney, so yes Downtown Disney is a possibility. With merchandise you can work anywhere.

With the parks sometimes you're only at one store (like the Emporium on Main Street MK) or rotating between several stores in one area (like between any of the stores in Fantasyland or any of the stores at the front of Hollywood Studios) I believe when you rotate from store to store you'll have the same costume.

Jamie is generally right however you could be a floater in DTD's West Side in which you would have a different costume for each store.

I am a current merch CP at the Animal Kingdom Lodge and we have 2 stores. Both ware the same costume. We either have early morning shifts (5am thru 7:30am) or get off at midnightish. The other cast members are much older (mostly retired) so the CPs do most stock shifts and we are now getting trained to use the powered pallet jack. :( I like working at a resort but for a change I am looking to pick up a shift at one of the parks. I think we have the best female costume it is like waring PJs all day, based on African styles it is a long tunic with pants underneath, so comfy!

You can literally work anywhere...I'd say try to get animal kingdom since they close early. Or a resort so it's not as busy.. maybe Art of Disney at Epcot if your into art, or D-Street at downtown..it sells all the vinylmations, its a really cool store.

I work at mouse gear at epcot. its HUGE, but smaller than world of disney. we have ugly costumes...but comfortable..kinda..too hot in my opinion..tan/blueish pants, purple half zip up shirt, ugly blue vest (new costumes in the spring tho!) I'll miss them but I'm glad they are finally changing them.

Like the last poster said, CP's tend to get crappier shifts, like every wednesday I work until 2 am because of extra magic hours ( close at 12- 2 hours to restock/straighten). They might be figuiring, college kids are awake anyways! which is true, but it still sucks.

It's not a less popular role at all, but maybe people don't talk about it as much because its the most predictable..its any retail job you'd have except on crack LOL. but really, it's retail but really really focused on pleasing guests way more than any other job I've had..and all I've pretty much had are retail jobs (CVS, bath and body works, sports authority, Deb). You'll have merchantainment training, which combines being a sales associate with entertaining guests as well. sometimes you might be merchantaining for 3 hrs, in which you might wear a mickey glove and wave at people and hand out stickers to children.

seriously..theres a lot to say about it..if you have any specific questions, message me.

I'm actually really looking forward to it, and I was wondering: you find out your work location on check-in day, right? I'm also assuming it's non-negotiable-you work where they want you? Is picking up shifts elsewhere difficult? Do the lines of customers get pretty large? Are people fairly decent in how they treat you? Sorry about all the questions, lol, I actually have a few more:)

I did merch as did my older 2 DDs when they came through the program. Oldest was at MK, Main Street in the Confectionary. She could be assigned any of the shops/carts on that side, but opted to be kitchen trained, so she stayed put most of the time.

2nd DD was put at DTD in Once Upon a Toy (which she hated at first b/c it was "ordinary" ;) ), but she grew to love it and they made her a money counter, so she had mostly late shifts. She extended her CP into the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, then went seasonal at World of Disney before joining the Kim Possible opening team.

I mentioned during my CP interview that AK was my favorite park and that is where I wound up being placed. I was in Dinoland (yeah, let's talk about ugly costumes!!! :lmao:) and was also trained to be a money counter, so I didn't spend as much time onstage. Dinoland merch also handles the midway games, so there was a position that was devoted to managing that aspect of things, which is what I did most of the time.

I found out my location on Day 2. The first day was more about getting folks settled into housing (I was offsite, so skipped a bunch of that) and getting fingerprinted, etc. The 2nd day was when I got my location and I was SO happy to be at AK, mostly b/c of the shorter hours (I was a f/t grad student, plus homeschooling 2 kids, so early evenings were important to me). You are placed based on business needs and sometimes from clues in your interviews, so you could be anywhere. When I did my management internship, I was placed at a resort shop, which was a completely different animal from the parks.

Picking up shifts is generally pretty easy, and there are usually a bit to go around in merch. One of the beauties of it, really. Attractions folks are limited to their areas, but if you are trained on the computer system, not only can you pick up merch shifts anywhere, but often QSFB shifts as well (to run the registers). When sporting events are in town, there are opportunities at WWoS, too. My oldest has a different role now, but still sometimes picks up shifts at the Pirates shop just for fun. You will also find MANY CPs who want days off, so would like to give or trade a shift away, so just make yourself known as the go-to person for that.

There have been a few times we've had some long queues in my locations, but most people have just waited 120 minutes for Expedition Everest, so it's not the end of the world, especially if they are inside. ;) I can count on one hand the number of times I had a difficult Guest as a CP and every time, I was able to handle their situation on my own without needing a manager. It was all about empowerment and making magic and when Guests see that, it really makes them happy.

Thanks for everyone's responses. It is so helpful to hear it from people who have first-hand knowledge. I really appreciate it

Another question: Can anyone tell me what type of shoes I can expect to look for in a merchandise role? I would imagine it must be pretty standard...black or white shoes probably? Does it vary with location?

Yes to both they will be black or white and it will depend on your work location. You also have to wear black socks with pants and a black shirt under your costume. (at DTD West Side that is also subject to change but I just wanted to let you know how serious they take it.)

This information has been really helpful! I've been accepted into merchandise as well. I'm really excited!

On my CP, I had to wear white socks with white shoes (I was in Dinoland). At the All Star, they have to wear black socks and black shoes. Shirt under the costume was optional and could be either white or black if it showed, otherwise it didn't matter. I often wore a gray tank under mine just as a sweat-absorber. In the cooler months, you can get an appropriate turtle neck from costuming and they can guide you on that. I highly recommend spending the money on a GOOD shoe. I saw many CPs with blowouts from their WalMart specials in the middle of a rain storm and that was never fun. You are going to be on your feet for hours and if you are stocking, you will be walking for hours. Your back, knees, and feet will thank you for good shoes.

My challenge for white shoes was finding something that was ALL white (no markings, no color). I finally went with this shoe:http://www.shoebuy.com/saucony-progrid-stabil-le-4/192222/428559 and LOVED it. It was THE. MOST. COMFORTABLE. SHOE. and it looked great for the whole time I was there. Shoebuy always has coupon codes, so I got it for about $80 shipped free. Comes in either black or white and once you know which shoes you need, you have 7 days to get them. If you have the money, I would recommend both black and white so if you pick up shifts anywhere that wears a different color, you are prepared.

ETA: some locations require a black dress shoe. This is nice, comfy choice:http://www.crocs.com/crocs-alice-work/11050,default,pd.html?cid=001&cgid=women-footwear

One more thing about shoes...there is a shoemobile that comes to property and will deduct the cost of the shoes over (I think) 4 paychecks, so that may be a route you might like to go. I got a pair there back when I thought I was going to FSF&B and they were fine, but not the best things ever.

If you do order something like that, can you have it shipped to your apartment complex? Gray, I remember you said you lived off-site, but do you have any idea how participants receive mail or packages? Something I definitely need to find out. I plan on sending a lot of mail and treats back home so I guess I need to find the nearest post office in a hurry!

You'll have an address to ship to once you are all checked in onsite. When my DDs did the program, I sent them care packages with no problem. If I remember correctly, they had to go pick them up from the main desk, but it was no biggie. I STILL don't know where the nearest Post Office is! :lmao: Thank heavens I can use the one by my house. And FYI, do NOT use the mail drops at the resorts, they are the slow boat around the Horn and back or something. I've sent letters that take WEEKS for some reason.

I did merchandise and really enjoyed it. I worked at the Emporium and we had very crazy hours but it was very fun. I liked my co-workers and my managers. I worked the registers and stocked so lots of customer interactions. I picked up a few shifts in Tommorwland but normally had to many hours to pick up a shift.

I think I found out where I would be on my second day but I saw it on the first day and it ended up being different since they needed more people in the Emporium.
