Will they do it with a smile or not at all? I'm a picky eat and have a few food allergies. We will be on the dining plan. Not looking for major changes - more like "can I have a basic type potato in place of a a fancy veggie dish". Only looking to replace one item with something else that they already have on the menu (probably a side from the children's menu).

Full-service restaurants will do many substitutions with no qualms. Some substitutions may end up costing a little extra, but generally not. Counter-service restaurants tend to be far less flexible.

We have never had a problem with substitutions of side dishes before. They always smile and say that it is possible.

Although Bicker is right that it's not as easy to make substitutions at counter service as it is at table service, I've still found WDW counter service to be much more agreeable to substitutions than similar restaurants outside WDW. :)

Yup, I agree: WDW folks are the best!

I think it really helps to say why you're asking first, then make your request -- as in,"I'm allergic to, or really don't care for, XYZ -- would it be possible to have ABC instead?" Giving the Cm the context for the request helps them both to understand it and support it -- they may offer more/other options that you hadn't even thought of if the understand why you are asking.....

If you say you are allergic to something I'm sure they will do whatever they can regardless if it is normally allowed or not. Good Luck :)
