Mendenhall Glacier- Juneau

One more vote here for car rental. We too used Juneau car rentals and it was super easy. Significant cost savings with great flexibility. Juneau is easy to get around, too.

For Mendenhall Glacier I have a few questions. For those of you that did it through DCL which of the 10+ options did you pick for excursions and what did you think?

Also it seems like you could pretty easily take a cab to the national park yourself and go do hikes etc. Have any of you done it on your own? Any tips/tricks? Is it easy to get a ride back?
We cruised the Wonder to Alaska in 2018, so I can't address Covid protocols. The ship docks a short distance away (walkable, but there's also a free looping shuttle) from a main tourist area of the town that has many vendors of tours available, as well as the Mt. Roberts Tramway, Tracy's Crab Shack, etc. At this tourist area, you can simply walk up to a vendor and buy bus transfers to Mendenhall Glacier (it was about $90 for the two of us, and they take credit cards). These are buses that make looping round trips, so that you can get on and off at the time of your choice. That's what we bought. It was an old school bus, not terribly comfortable but okay. I don't remember seeing any nice coach buses doing the loop. The bus dropped us off at Mendenhall, and said how often the bus would return for pick-ups (probably every 30 minutes or so). This was great, as we were free to spend exactly the amount of time we wanted exploring the glacier, and then could leave when we felt like it, and we didn't have to stick with a group. No stress, no hassle. We had plenty of time to go back to the main tourist area afterwards, have lunch at Tracy's Crab Shack, and also take the Mt. Roberts Tramway and explore that, as well.

Funny story about cars in Juneau;
Our friends who live there let us borrow their car. Nothing fancy, an old pickup I think. They laughed as they watched us lock it the first time we got out. There really is no need; Juneau is locked in by water and glaciers. You can't drive there - you have to put your car on a ferry to get it there or back and it's not cheap to do that. Not only that, everyone knows each other there - it's not a big place. If anyone stole your car, you'd get it back pretty easily, and everyone would know who took it too. Take the keys with you when you get out of the car if you want (they didn't) but do you need to lock it? Nope. Just don't leave anything in it.
