Menards and their goofy returns policy

So DH bought a miter saw on Friday at Menards. Today's Sunday paper had the Menards ad and this same exact saw was on sale for $50 off.

DH drove over to Menards with the receipt, thinking that they could just do a price adjust on it, rather than him toting the box back into the store only to tote it back home. (Hasn't even used the saw yet).

Whoever it was at the return desk told him that the receipt wasn't good enough, that's he'd have to bring the saw back, get a full refund and go buy a new one. The other woman behind the desk, apparently was like, "You've got to be kidding me."

So DH comes home, gets the saw, goes back...and what to they do...they just do a price adjust.

What a waste of time and energy. This is one of the reasons I don't like Menards.

I bought some ice cream not long ago at a local grocery store chain, regular price, only because it was a new flavor and I REALLY wanted to try it.

2 days later, it was on sale, so I asked if they'd price adjust. They said I had to bring the item back in. I said um, what? Yeah. I said it's kind of hard to bring back in an item that no longer exists (since I'd eaten it all!). Guess I'll just buy new and return that.

She said well, if there is one on the shelf, you can just go get that one.

Now why didn't you say that to begin with?

Oh, this brings back memories of living in Illinois. I'd never even heard of Menards before we moved to the midwest. I usually liked their selections, and there was a new one near me that was huge and had a ton of stuff.

The one thing I really hated about them was their commercials, Menaaaaaards! UGH! :rotfl:

Actually, I understand why they do this policy. An unscrupulous person could pick up a receipt out of a store parking lot (dropped by someone) and collect them. They could then take the receipt back in the store to get cash for the difference. I never thought about this until a Home Depot employee told me that receipts (especially for those small items purchased with cash) were a hot commodity for crooks. These people would find the receipts and then shoplift the appropriate item. They would then return it to the store for a "refund". This is why many stores now require a driver's license or other id to return an item. Local home depot employees were also sent on hourly checks to look for "dropped receipts" in the parking lot.

It is really amazing what dishonest people will do for a buck!!!

How did your husband pay for the miter saw? I can see the reasoning behind what Beca described if it was paid for by cash or check. If he paid by credit/debit card and he had the card with him, then it should be a simple matter of returning the price adjustment to him through the card. That way there wouldn't be a possibility of a refund going to a potential thief.
