Put me in the camp that says it is generally not worth getting.
If you can pool a group of folks and split the cost, or this is a first trip, and you think you want all the ride photos, then maybe.
For us though, we- even with extended family - we don't come back from WDW with many Photopass photos. My family isn't one that wants to wait around for a Photopass photographer, we'd rather take our own photo faster and be done with it.
Truly, drives us nuts to watch the family in line in front of us request every possible permutation of family sub-group pose for repeat shots: just kids, now the grandparents, now the boys, boys+men, just the women, everyone, everyone in a different pose, everyone in a third pose. Oh wait, we forgot grandma who was in the bathroom. Argh! (Okay I exaggerate, but only a bit.)
We do see some characters, but only when the line is short. To me, an hour in line to see a character is time I could have been riding BTMRR.
I think last trip we had about 40 photos total. We would have also had ride photos, but we usually hop into the single rider lines over waiting an hour. I'd rather wait ten minutes, and sacrifice the photo.
Some years ago, I happened to have three trips nearly back to back - two with extended family on both sides of the family. So we bought it. I also ha da bunch of photos from my own camera. Those are the only photos I ever really used for anything, because they were on my computer and easiest to access.
I don't mean to be cynical, it's just how often do you go through scrapbooks? I enjoy displaying a few photos around the house, but really only use about one per trip to remember it.
