I don't know a huge amount about cameras. But I need a new memory card for the camera for holiday, but am not sure what size to buy. Any advice?

What type? I just bought 2 gb SD cards from Play.com. Extreme III, about the best on market, £9.99 each free delivery and cashback via quidco.
All depends how many MP your camera is to amount you can fit on.
Play.com have been about the most competative this year for memory, I can't fault their service.

I paid £19.99 for a Sandisk 4GB card from CostCo in the UK. Excellent value if you know anybody who has a card.

standard Sandisk? or Extreme III? check out play and compare, depending on type of card they have 4gb cards from £7.99, Extreme III £17.99
Would be suprised Costco being cheaper, they are quite expensive usually.

Not sure but it was a pro duo memory stick for video and camera. Brought it over a year ago so was very good value, I think.

Check your camera spec - some cameras can only accept cards up to a certain size.

7dayshop are sometimes OK if you are ordering other things, they do some cheap stuff but for a small lone item, expensive.

We just bought 2 Transcend 8GB Secure Digital HC Memory Cards for £14.64 each from Amazon. Should keep us going for the month we're there!!!

Check your camera's manual for which type the camera takes first off, then I'd post what sort it is and people should be able to point you in the right direction. Prices do vary between types of memory.

Also, have a look and see how many pictures your camera can take on each size card - should be in the tech specs of the manual, that will help you decide on what size you need - always better to go for a bigger card than you think you'll need.

I would be interested to hear other peoples opinions on this but I personally wouldn't 'put all my eggs in one basket' so to speak and try to rely on a huge capacity memory card for the duration of my holiday.
The chances of getting 90% of your way through your vacation only for the card to fail or get damaged are probably small - but it is a possibility all the same and I for one would be devastated at all the lost memories.
We came back from Florida in June and were unfortunate enough to have a bag containing our digital camera, camcorder and 2 x DS lites stolen from us as we waited for transport. Luckily I had taken my laptop along as well so had been transfering the photos over every 2 or 3 days, plus we had only put a new tape in the video a couple of days before so all we ended up losing was the last 2 or 3 days of our holiday - but even that hurt when we thought back to what we had done (dinner at whispering canyon, MK fireworks, breakfast at Grand Floridian). But it could have been so much worse.
I will be taking my laptop in the future and doing the same again but, even if I didn't ,I would consider going to somewhere like walmarts where they will put the photos on a disc at least once a week - just to have a back up.

For me I am not one to lose sleep if I lost pics, even though I love my photography I would be annoyed for a split second and get over it, for others it could devastating.
Saying that we put all ours on laptop every evening, I usually take about 1,000 pics a week so August in 24 nights I might have over 3,000 pics, laptop is only option really. Just hope hard drive doesn't die

I'd be inclined to agree with this I must admit. I guess it depends a lot on what size card you need, a point and shoot is going to take a small amount of space for each pic, whereas if you're shooting RAW files on a DSLR it's another matter. I know it used to be the case that the big cards were slightly more likely to fail than the small ones.

That having been said we always take our laptop and put on there each night.

We have taken 2 laptops on every US holiday for past 4 years, about 10 trips, during the day they sit in a drawer or in a cupboard. Never a problem but our laptops are low value with very little info on there maybe worth £350 each to replace so no big deal if they went. I do have all risks cover for them and checked with insurer we are covered but they are about 2 year old so probably wouldn't claim. (DW & DS would probably be happy to get new)
As for use, check weather, exchange rates, menus, opening times, addresses, emails, video calls home much better than a phone call, DS still in touch with his friends when we go for 4 weeks, Online check in for coming home, most important upload photos, expecting over 3,000 in the 24 nights we are there next month.
Its like anything else, once you have got used to having one there you can't imagine not having one.

Mine's for work. Need to keep in touch with my emails whilst away, and also very handy for saving photos.

Hide 'em somewhere handy - in reality not that much of a prize for thieves with laptops being so cheap - just keep your cash safe, from my experience!

You will need to check your camera spec,our camera is a Canon S3 & only 2 years old but I checked with canon before purchasing a new card.I had been looking at 8GBS so that I could take small portions of video along with our photos but Canon told me the most for my camera was a 2GB - still nearly 400 pics at high res.Like Wayne I bought the Sandisk Extreme from Play,I have 2 x 1GB Sandisk extremes & so far they have been great.

We use ours for the same reasons as already mentioned (checking timings etc on the net, booking tickets, keeping up with emails from family back home) but mainly for updating our website with new photos every 2 or 3 days, for the family and friends back home to look at it. We just see it as a modern - and much more reliable alternative - to postcards.
We've never had a problem with security and will continue to take ours because of the benefits it provides.
