I have been at Universal during this time for past few years and the crowds have continued to get bigger.
Also remember that locals will be taking advantage of the long weekend.
Be there at rope drop.
Yes, if you are just focusing on the Two Potter Parks you can do them both in one day. Hogsmeade can get pretty congested with people.
There are only two rides in Hogsmeade (Forbidden Journey and Flight of the Hippogriff) and one in a Diagon Alley (Escape From Gringotts).
There is also the Hogwarts Express that runs between both Potter Parks. You have to have a Park to Park ticket to ride it.
The Potter Rides now have Express Pass.
Remember there are shops in both Potter Parks to wander through.
Make sure to have a meal at The Three Broomsticks or Leaky Cauldron. I like the Three Broomsticks better.
If your son wants to do the magic spell spots in the Potter Parks. Take him to the Ollivanders in Diagon Alley and watch the show and then let him pick an interactive want of his favorite character to do the magic spells in Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley. A map of all the wand spots and needed wand movement are located in the wand box.
There is also a Ollivanders wand show in Hogsmeade, but I like the one in Diagon Alley better.
There are metal medallions on the ground in front of the spell spots and there is usually a TM at those sites helping everyone.
Look at all sticky’s on the two Potter parks. There folks have given all the information on what not to miss in both Parks.
Enjoy yourself at Hogsmeade, Diagon Alley and the dark Knockturn Alley.
Have a great time at Universal
