Am I the only one who keeps thinking Disney is charging $100 per point more to go Direct, then another $100 to get full "Blue Card" benefits per year... like the $100 more per point was just not enough ?! Every time someone says we'll get the Extras for going Direct, I want to remind them how "fleeting and arbitrary" those benefits can be. With MBB Disney just made that clear enough, maybe we can quit warning people.

Agreed - and with the disclosures, it's completely within their rights to gradually move the "free" direct perks over to this paid tier while raising the price. Won't surprise me if everything from dining and merchandise discounts to AP discounts eventually become part of this paid tier and the price increases by leaps and bounds over time. It's no longer nickel and diming - seems like they only looking for the Benjamins at this point.

Granted, this won’t make sense for everyone, but I don’t get the negativity. It’s something optional that owners c have access to and if it makes sense for them, it’s a nice option to have.

It’s not a nice option to have. It’s a gateway to put every benefit behind the paywall. I can’t believe I have to keep saying this.

If and when that happens, we can all be pissed about it. The only thing we have ever been guaranteed is to book our home resort(s) for lodging.

But that kind of paywall would definitely decrease the overall desirability of the DVC product, so Disney should be very careful with these decisions.

It doesn’t exactly take a crystal ball to see where this is going. Let me ask you this, why are any of these meager benefits behind a paywall?

Why would you not just rent out 95 points for and then use the cash.
Surely that’s better value?
You may get more dollars if you rent points versus swap them for an AP. I'm waiting for more details, but if the delta between point swapping for an AP and renting is just a few dollars per point, then I may do it. If an owner has sufficient points, coughing up points for an AP may not be a big deal to them. We aren't talking huge sums of money here.

Because DVC believes that owners are willing to cough up $99 (or more) to get access to them, and I'll bet anyone a Dole Whip that they are right. This will sell.

Doomsday speculating is a favorite activity for many.
I'm not going to suggest that Disney isn't above their fair share of skullduggery, and they've never walked past a penny without picking it up, but if Disney was going to dip their toe in the water, they'd more likely have slipped at least one previously free perk into the package. Bundling a bunch of stuff that doesn't lessen the range of benefits currently offered to eligible members gives them no metric to determine how such a transition would be received. If they had, for example, actually eliminated all free access to the lounge, or less conspicuously added more restrictions to eligibility for Moonlight Magic, and bundled it exclusively with MMB, then that would have been a different story.

And yes, I get that they can "take it slow" and start with something that doesn't materially affect anyone negatively ("Round One"), but if they do come back with "Round Two" and do remove a previously complimentary perk, then any and all data and the "slipping it in the back door" benefit they enjoyed from "Round One" becomes moot and they've ended up right where they would have been anyway by just going directly to taking a previous free perk away.

Oh I completely agree this is a gateway to adding more "perks" to this and increasing the price.

But I'm reserving full judgment until we see how it actually plays out.

I'm already kind of pissed about the priority lounge access. If going forward they put real benefits in the package that actually save money over the buy-in cost (e.g. ticket or AP discounts and such), and don't punish members who choose not to purchase (like the lounge access does), I'll be ok with it.

I think this will work for us. I know getting our APs with the points is not the best use of them but we're at a stage now where that's ok. We currently live further away than we did when we bought into DVC and also have other hobbies taking our time and money. When we've had extra points for the year, I've dealt with renting them out but that's also a hassle, especially when Covid hit. We've been doing 1-Bedrooms a lot recently just because of the extra points.

It’s clear you’ve hit your threshold of what you believe was acceptable with DVC. You don’t have to keep saying it, people understand your point. I think it’s just many (here in this thread at least) don’t fully see it that way… and it doesn’t mean you’re wrong or that what you’re saying won’t come to fruition. But at the end of the day we all have our own limits. Many before you hit it awhile ago and sold their contacts or really downsized because they couldn’t accept the changes. For many others, this is just the way of the world and this ultra capitalist business path is not new or can be avoided. If the mess of restrictions didn’t sway enough people to pushback or rebel against at DVC in a meaningful enough way to force change, a $99 non-perk, perk won’t either, even if it’s just the beginning.

For points based Sorcerer pass? It’s all relative if it’s a good value because not all of use use rental rate to determine a good deal.

If it turns out to be the 80 to 95 points costs as report, I don’t think it is bad and would save me from taking $1k next year to pay for it.
But you also have to keep in mind that you are saving $901 cash, not $1K, because this thing costs $99 to allow you the privilege of using points to pay for the AP.

But if you use points to renew an AP, buy some OTU points, and get priority access to the member lounge a few times, then that $99 fee gets spread incrementally across ALL of the benefits you use.

That was rumored by an “insider” last year but so far crickets. I asked him about it maybe 6 months ago and he said as far as he knew they were still researching it. But I think it’s fully possible that that became this.

The lounge thing negatively impacts direct owners who now will have to pay to ensure they actually get their prior benefit.

Losing perks at the drop of a hat is of course is one of the risks of buying direct (and why I discourage most people from doing so) but I think that stinks.

I don't know but I have never had to wait to get into the Epcot lounge any time we have visited. But, its not just the lounge, its everything that people are pointing regarding this.

Sure, lounge access is going to be a bit different, but if they keep adding more lounges, then there are more places for those with membership extras to visit during a trip....t

Maybe it is just me then but to me, options are always a good thing and that having flexiblity and products that work. Right now, at $99, it has the potential to give people something of real value...the tickets, the AP, and the bonus OTU....at the expense that someone might have to wait longer to visit a lounge? When, a waitlist at the lounge isn't even always required? Seems to be a fair trade.

That's also true, but only if you only allocate the cost of the $99 MMB to a single AP, and that you're not taking advantage of the other benefits.

Do you guys remember how much these forums liked Tables in Wonderland? I do. You had to pay to get a better discount.

I don’t think people dislike having to pay to get some perks. They just don’t like it when there’s one option they won’t use.
