Membership Magic at Theme Park resort reservation

Members that have a valid resort reservation can make Membership Magic reservations earlier than members who do not have a resort reservation. And if the resort reservation is later cancelled, the Membership Magic reservation will automatically be cancelled.
Here is my question - If a Membership Magic Event is held on Wednesday night, and I have a DVC resort reservation, checking out on Wednesday morning, does that count as a resort reservation for the purpose of getting my spot at a MM event early? Or must I be staying Wednesday night, the night of the MM event?

When I called MS they told me the reservation had to include the night of the event, but I'm not sure they weren't just telling me that to justify why I wasn't able to book the MM event on line.
