Members "trading" points at different resorts - a common practice?

I had a very successful experience with a trade/transfer in points. By viewing posts, I found someone who wanted a reservation 11 months out at a DVC resort other than her home resort. I made the reservation for her using a substantial number of points and in turn she then transferred her points from her home resort to me. I also happened to own at the resort from which she was transferring points. (However, my contract at that resort is small-75-- and I was anxious to get more points there for 09 (able to bank into 2010) because I was planning an extended stay.)
We communicated well and as it was, I had to wait 6 months before she could transfer in the points, as I wanted them in my 2009 use year and they were from her 2009 use year. But this was explained up front and of course, as owner, I remained in control of the reservation (had the transfer not gone through).
She did not have quite enough points to make it an "even" trade, so she paid me for the difference.
The transfer was made on June 1, 2008 for the June 2009 use year and it worked like clockwork.

This type of transaction is exactly the purpose intended for the Rent/Trade Board when WebmasterPete started it back over 10 years ago.

Thanks for sharing your experiences! :)

I am trying to learn how do a transfer and this is the first place I read about a time frame involved with making transfers.

Would you mind explaining this in more depth?

Thank you,
Carolyn

I too am curious about renting or a transfer of points. In my case, I have a small contract but would like to rent or transfer points in to make a reservation that requires more points than I have available in the current UY or can borrow from next year.

If I understand this correctly, the owner I rent the points from makes a reservation for me. I would make my own reservation with my points. I assume I could link those reservations in some way? I would also assume that there is a possibility that I might have to change rooms due to the 2 different reservations. Are my assumptions correct?

The other option would be to purchase a transfer of points from an owner. Once the transfer is complete, I could make my own reservations. Since I do not have enough points on my own to make the type of reservation I want, I would have to wait to make a reservation until after the transfer. My question is, what if I am unable to make the reservation I want? I assume then I would have to try for another time, another resort or bank the points for later using the previous owners UY?

This can get very confusing, can't it? :scared1: TIA for your help.

If your reservation and the reservation you rent from another owner are for the same resort, same room type, and you have those linked, then you won't have to change rooms.

If you decide to do it through a transfer, then yes, you must wait until the transfer has happened to book your reservation--well, at least the nights that will use the transferred points ( you can always book the nights with your point prior to getting the transfer and then add to it when the transferred points come through).

If, by the time the transfer happens, you can't get what you want, you would then have to book for a different time or bank the points (if they are still in the banking window--transferred points retain their home resort and UY so take that in to consideration when finding the points). Transfers are final transactions so you couldn't give the points back.

Thanks Sandi. As usual, someone on the DISboard comes through and helps us newbies with the intricacies of DVC. Y'all are great!! Thanks again. ;)
