Member Services now sees direct vs. resale

This just makes me so sad. We love our home resort, Old Key West, which we bought in 2008 via resale, and really would prefer to just do our add on there as well, but there are no points available to buy direct from Disney. Therefore, we must buy resale...and we are having a terrible time finding an available contract in our use year.

Did you ask your guide? We recently added on a 100 point OKW with our existing use year.

Good Luck!

I would definitely call MS and make sure that it gets straightened out, it IS NOT a resale, it was a property handed down to a relative. Please let us know what happened.

But, if the OP bought the contract resale (which we still don't know), then I would think, even when gifted, it would remain a resale contract.

I am hoping that the OP comes back and clarifies this because you are right, if the points were bought direct from the start, then it should be still listed that way.

Sorry I hadn't been responding. For some reason, I wasn't receiving updates about this thread via email, so I didn't realize there were comments sitting here waiting for a response.

We've now transferred a total of four contracts to family members. Of those four contracts, only one was purchased direct by us. The other three were acquired via resale. I've had everyone check and all four are currently showing as "resale" on the system. They also all show the acquisition dates of the kids, not our acquisition date of each contract. Since we were assured by Member Administration that gratuitous transfers to family members would retain the same benefits as the original purchase, then this method of recording the date of transfer rather than the original purchase date could be problematic. Picture this scenario... you purchased a contract via resale prior to the March 20 deadline and (sometime after March 20) you want to gift it to your child or other family member. You SHOULD be able to do so without your child losing any of the benefits. However, with the way the dates are being recorded, that transfer would show up as a resale that closed after March 20 and the extra benefits would be lost. Some type of distinction needs to be made on the Disney system to reflect that the newest transfer was gratuitous, and the original transfer date to the FAMILY should be the date of record when assigning benefits.

Thanks for clarifying. At least it explains why some are showing "resale" still but as you said, something else needs to be in place to indicate that transfers between family will retain those benefits.

I think this is an incredibly important issue to clarify. If points purchased from Disney are gifted to a son/daughter or are inherited by the kids, do they automatically become "resale" points?

I think someone needs to call their guide and get this in writing!

Katherine

Good luck getting your DVC guide to put ANYTHING in writing! I do good to get mine to respond to an email and I NEVER get it in writing if the email is asking what is the current price per point!

They cannot and should not give hand written contracts of any sort. The legal paperwork is there for a reason. They are not supposed to respond to emails at all so your guide is risking their job every time they email you.

Maybe they are looking at how to better reflect a contract origin and status in their computer fields as we speak. :rotfl2: Maybe they will have all these issues resolved soon. :rotfl:
