Member/Renter Feedback rating

I think it is a little difficult to do, but an idea might be to agree on pricing and all thru here (DIS) and then post to ebay with a buy it now that gets immediately scooped up by the renting party, then use the Ebay feedback system.

We run into a similar (feedback)problem over at ClubLexus in our marketplace section...we have guys/gals whose first post is to place something for sale, kind of tough to police as a moderator, I have always recommended a minimum post count or paying/contributing member of the board to be allowed to sell...don't know how that would fly here though.

The disadvantage to coming to an agreement here and then posting to eBay using a buy-it-now is that the seller would incur listing fees, etc.

Also, not everyone is eBay friendly.

We had already suggested using our own DISauction program for rentals and were met with wild indignation from many- even before the program began- so it never was even tried.

It's unlikely we can provide any sort of feedback program, other than posting a personal report about successful rentals using the existing board mechanism. Since the DIS is merely providing a free classified ad service and no mediation is provided for any disagreement (all transactions are between parties- buyer ... and seller... beware), we have no means or desire to monitor accuracy of any feedback.

i think this is the key here. while the idea of a rating system is great, it really is very hard to implement and enforce accuracy. trust is not an easy thing on the internet...
even sites like epinions and ebay ratings system can have problems and inconsistencies... with fake reciprical ratings, or casually doled out "trust" ratings or the problem user who purposefully gives you bad ratings.
the best thing people on the DISboards can do is to read past posts by the users you are thinking about renting to/from. and even that is difficult to do, as it seems like lots of people create new accounts to do rentals, and/or are lurkers who haven't posted much before.

I certainly didn't mean to imply it would be easy to implement!

With respect to reading previous posts, aren't only the last few months available? So historical messages about previous agreements by a member may not be available to read. For example, the discussion about the unit I rented last year and the renter's subsequent comments cannot be viewed because those pages are too old!

Am I missing something?

I think the default when searching is 30 days, but I think you can select a longer period of time, not sure what that is though.

There are archives, but personally I haven't had the need to nor have figured out how to access them.

On terms of ratings...I think the easiest way is to ask for references. Have they rented out/rented points before? If someone hasn't, then it's basically a trust issue.

I have to say that I have seen less than a handful of agreements not work out from reading these boards daily.

Tom, i think you can go back as far as 2001 if you wanted to ;)
i don't know about the archives, i haven't gotten that far back myself.
