Since we are still looking into the DVC, I was wondering how difficult it is to use the member getaways program. Is it hard to get a room, and do you need to make plans far in advance? What are some of the other locations like? Are they as first class as Disney? How do you know how many points that each location requires. After the tour we received a book that lists some, but not every point value. I'd appreciate any info that you can give me.

DVC members arrange for Interval International exchange weeks through DVC Member Services using the "800" number on the membership card. Interval International exchanges are part of DVC's "World Passport Collection."

Member Services can check for immediate availability, but you can also request exchanges for properties that aren't currently available. You can make your request up to two years ahead. Being at the "front of the line" with a high-demand property such as DVC is an advantage. Being flexible also helps. For example, you'll have better chance if you ask for "any check-in date in March, April, or May," at the location you want to visit than if you ask for "check-in on March 24." (Check-ins are typically on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday.)

At most timeshares, there won't be any availability until 12 to 2 months prior to the week, as the timeshare owners who wish to exchange begin to deposit their weeks.

Disney has selected only the cream of the crop of Internal International resorts. Even so, many of them may not be up to the standards of DVC resorts. If you search through old posts by Dean, you'll find some really good information about what II resorts are up to Disney standards. Marriott Vacation Club resorts are usually excellent.

When Member Services has a match for you, they'll contact you. The number of points is based on depositing a comparable DVC week from any DVC resort, using normal DVC rules (11 months out at your home resort, 7 months elsewhere). Member Services picks a DVC week that will take the fewest points, while still satisfying the definition of "comparable."

There's a $75 fee. And the points are gone; you can't use them at DVC if you change your mind. The DVC week goes to Interval International, where it will be used to fill an exchange request for a lucky Interval International member.
