Just got back from picking up a prescription for my DS for his ADHD so that I could refill it before we leave in 2 days and because of the type of prescription it is (adderall), I cannot fill it until SATURDAY! Does anyone know if there are any pharmacies on property that are accessible by Disney transportation? I am awaiting a call back from my local pharmacist to see if they can overnight the prescription but the pharmacy assistant doesn't think that's a possibility because it's a controlled substance.
I'm trying to remain positive but our first ever Disney trip is not the place for my son to not have his meds! There is ALWAYS something...

Turner Drug will deliver to the resort (although the controlled substance issue may affect their delivery). I assume that your physician can transfer the prescription. We have used them before without any problems. Their contact information is:

Okay, found out that this prescription has to be handed to a pharmacist. Any idea how much a taxi would be off Disney property? I found a CVS 8.4 miles from our resort.

I'll figure it out!

DD is on a similar type of prescription and the insurance company okayed the pharmacy to fill it early for us. I faxed them a copy of our travel docs & they approved the early fill. You may want to call them and try that.

This has happened to me twice. Once with my mom, once with my son and their respective prescriptions.

Like woodkins, I was able to both times get an early refill. This stuff happens, they are used to it. Call both your doctor and your pharmacy and ask about this.

Its hard to say with the cab thing, 8 miles can be 10 minutes or 30 minutes depending on the traffic. You might look into Walgreens, there are several nearby. We went to a Walgreens once and it took us very littel time from Old Key West. I am sure there are others near the WDW complex.

Good luck!

You guys are awesome! We are calling in a few to see what we can do with the insurance company. We're literally 2 days short! Even a partial fill would mean the world. Thanks for the tips!!

We have also done this more than once. You DEFINITELY don't want to head to the World without the Adderall! LOL!

Also call your doc, he/she may have free samples, esp. since you're only 2 days short. If all else fails, call the resort now and ask for the concierge. Ask them for the closest pharmacy and then take a cab.

I hope that you got the help you needed from the insurance company, and if that didn't help I liked the idea of the Dr and free samples. Let us know how it turns out for you !

You could pay cash, out of pocket, before you leave for enough pills to "tide you over" while on vacation. I'm sure your doctor would write you one. (I certainly would for one of my patients in a similar situation.) And just leave the evil insurance company out of it.

I just reread the original post and realized that it doesn't say anything about an insurance company. - That was another poster who commented on that. This is between your doctor and you and the DEA (since it is a controlled substance). I still feel your doctor will help you solve this problem and will carefully document on your son's chart the situation... He/she probably won't have samples but he/she can give you another script.

The free sample idea is great except . . . physicians can't give free samples of controlled substances (Adderall, Ritalin, Vicodin, Oxycotin, etc)! But, good advice if someone is not on a controlled substance and needs an early fill.

Your employer may not allow early fills. So, don't get too bummed if you call and find out you can't . . . It's a plan design decision (especially if your medical plan is self-insured), and some employers won't allow it.

Are you being denied an early fill by the insurance company or the pharmacy? For controlled substances, I think you legally CANNOT fill early. If that is the case, then you may want to keep exploring the Orlando pharmacy option. If you use one of the national chains (Walgreens, CVS), I think a script be easily transferred from one location to another.

PS--I work in Human Resources (specifically, benefits), so I get these kinds of questions often. And, our company does allow early fills for vacations--as long as it's permitted by the DEA and the refill quantity allows it.

Good luck and have a great vacation!

I work in a pharmacy and when someone has a prescription for controlled medication and want early release, we need written authorization from your physician, and this can be faxed to the pharmacy. It happens all the time. It has nothing to do with your insurance company (it would if it was , say, a month early or more than a week early). They aren't giving it to you because your insurance co won't pay, it's because the physician put a time interval on it. The other solution is to get a new presciption from your physician. These are the rules in Ontario, I can't imagine it being too much different. Good luck.

Actually our rules can be different - our pharmacy only needs release from the insurance company. As I've said, we've done this multiple times. Not sure what the DEA has to say about it, but we always have a few months worth of RXs written out in advance (but post-dated) by our doctor. But our insurance won't pay for them until so many days have elapsed from the prior RX and once we got approval from them, we were good. We have never had to call the doctor, but that doesn't mean the pharmacy hasn't and we don't know about it.

But I agree with the PP who said free samples are probably not possible because it's a controlled substance. The meds, while valuable, are a pain - you have to have the written scrip and take it to the pharmacy, no calling in for refills or anything and I don't know if the drug reps are permitted to give out sample paks of controlled substances, but I think not.

Do you use CVS at home? Because my husband forgot his meds on a trip once, and we were able to go right into a CVS, and they had all his info in the computer.

I am a pharmacist and there is no reason you should have to take time out of your vacation to deal with this.

If you are only 2 or 3 days early, either the pharmacy is deciding not to fill it or the prescriber has given some kind of indication not to fill it until Saturday. Either way, the prescriber should be able to call the pharmacy and give permission to fill it now.

If it is 6 or more days early, the physician should also just be able to call the pharmacy and give permission for an early fill. Then, if the insurance is involved, the pharmacy can call them and ask for an over-ride to pay for the early fill. In the unlikely event that the insurance won't pay, you could then pay out of pocket.

THANK YOU EVERYONE for your posts!!

We've tried every avenue...called the insurance company ~ they have nothing to do with the decision to fill or not to fill (just to pay! LOL). We went into the pharmacy thinking a personal visit would make someone understand our predicament better. Out of their hands also, they said what the doc ended up saying when we called there. He cannot write more than a 30 day prescription for adderall, nj state law. The prescription he gave us clearly states it cannot be filled before 10/09/10. So, we will bring the prescription with us and take a cab to a local pharmacy. I'll prob call the Poly today and inquire about what is closest and which car service to use. Then I have to figure out when we can fit a pharmacy run into our schedule! LOL

I was bummed at first, I've been planning for months and painstakingly remembered every little detail (so I think!). But it is what it is and it's not going to ruin our time! I GREATLY appreciate the response, I'm so happy I stumbled across this site. :goodvibes

Insurers and pharmacies make all efforts to

A. Not fill prescriptions 1 second before they are required to
B. Never give one pill or drop over what they are required to in a supply
C. Charge as much as is legally allowed.

This is the way of the world...

wait...its the way of the United States. But go ahead, blame the system...not the profiteerers who control it and pull the strings:woohoo:

Hope the situation is resolved as conveniently as possible...i keep getting my insurance attempting to deny claims for INSULIN refills...and my doctor won't right refills without a visit....

which would be fine if i wasn't a 20+ year veteran of the medication, there were an alternative, or i know pretty much as much about how its used and works than any MD can tell me.

such is life

And Turner drug is your most convenient bet....easy delivery and you don't have to alter your day to get it. They are perfect for this situation
